New Call of Duty skipping PC

Activision CEO reveals that next Call of Duty game won't be for PCs, but rather for next-gen consoles; likely COD spin-off.

PC gamers have long held onto certain franchises as their own, with popular series like Doom, Quake, and Civilization all originally built with the PC in mind. With the advent of more sophisticated consoles, several PC franchises have made the jump over to the Xbox and PlayStation 2, and more recently the Xbox 360.

One such game that did so with phenomenal commercial success was Activision's Call of Duty 2. The game long held the top slot for best-selling Xbox 360 game and easily outsold any other Xbox 360 launch title. The game enjoyed great success on the PC as well, though the Xbox 360 numbers outshone the PC's as more consoles were fed into the market.

Apparently, Activision was looking at those numbers. In today's postearnings conference call, Activision chairman and CEO Bobby Kotick specifically noted that the next Call of Duty game, due in the company's third quarter of this fiscal year (October 1, 2006 - December 31, 2006), is "not a PC product, it's a console product and it's all next-gen."

All is not lost for the keyboard and mouse crew, however. The game is likely one of the Call of Duty spin-offs and not developed by the franchise's original minds, Infinity Ward. 2005's Call of Duty: Big Red One and 2004's Call of Duty: Finest Hour, both of which received lukewarm reviews, were developed by Treyarch and Spark Interactive, respectively.

More hope comes from news from 2005. According to job listings posted by Infinity Ward just after last year's E3, the company is ramping up its teams for its Call of Duty games as well as a new intellectual property, but applicants should be open to both PC and next-gen console development. Also, Activision expects to release a COD game in its following fiscal year, which keeps in line with a new, full Infinity Ward-developed PC Call of Duty game being released every two years.

Requests for clarification sent to Activision were not returned as of press time.

    i think that activtion loss there minds!!!!! why u dont do it on pc?? pc is the 1st and will be the 1st for ever. i wana 2 tell u something let EAgames be the 1st with there games(middle of honor Airborne) they will be the 1st because they care the pc gamers all the time **** xbox360,xbox,psp,ps2,ps3 _/_ in the........

    Just blame Activision where crew doesn`t underestand that PC is first and last for Game.
    Consoles come n go. .But PC lasts. So Someone needed to remind them, there`re just some rookies in Activision...lol

    Allright lol, some1 thinks this the the end of PC gaming... You tard you do realise that in maybe less than 6 months the consoles are gonna be outdated allready, the 360 is all ready lagging behind PC graphic. TBH console are a smaller less versatile PC for more expensive than a decent Dell or other premades will will still run the majority of games fine. Consoles are fine if yuo don't/can't work a keyboard or are too dumb to.

    oh and ive spent £400 on my PC in the last 5 years and it still runs oblvion fine a shade underfull spec its a myth that console are cheaper.

    PC its the FOR EVER GEN Console, Xbox360? PS3? WII? they all sxk next to a Gaming PC like mine, I will never pay $500 for a console that has the resolution of a Old Fashioned 128mb video PC. NO WAY. COD, U NEED US IN THE PC!

    No next-Gen console is going to replace the PC. You just need a new graphics card and your set to go, which you don't even need to do that, my 64 meg card worked great for COD 2, better then xbox 360 which I played on also. I think they are still going to make COD for PC. And I also don't buy EA games, because they buy out smaller studios that anyway make games better than they do, microsoft does the same thing.

    lmao EA sucks and no medal of honer will ever be a replacement for COD i have 360 and PC no probs here. Just with the monopolizing EA trying to buy every other game studio out. Just like the NFL and PGA licences NFL 2K soo much better than Madden. I will never buy an EA game buy being the key word.

    No COD 3 for PC! Well, perhaps when MOH Airborne becomes the 2007 Game of the Year for PC, ACTIVISION will have second thoughts. It might be too late by that point. It will for me. I have played all COD versions and enjoyed them. But, like I tell my wife the best vote is the one you make with your DOLLARS. Bye-bye COD.

    errr, its not 'all next gen, its coming out on the PS2... also, have you seen it... its not exactly gears of war in the graphics state... LOL, but dont worry fellow pc gamers, it still only suports 20 odd players online, We get 40 odd player COD 2 and mods.

    OMG!!!! NO!, wtf PC started COD, they are stupid, PC>console, consoles are not next-gen, my computer is betterr than those damn sony ps3's and xbox360's.     Screw COD3.Wait for the next one.

    People. Consoles are here to stay, so live with it. No amount of boycotting games is going to change the way upper management in companis look at dollars and cents.

    Besides, there are many other games on PC anyways.

    half-Life 2 kicks ass in my book. Can't wait to play its Episodes.
    Fear is the best graphically intense game I played in a long time and its got an expansion pack coming out.
    Far Cry was killer. Crysis is up next.
    Brothers in Arms was absolutely great and the 3rd is coming out soon
    Stalker : Shadow of Chernobyl is supposed to be good when it comes out.
    Supreme Commander (not a FPS, but still going to be GOOD!)

    So what are we complaining about. the article states that "Also, Activision expects to release a COD game in its following fiscal year, which keeps in line with a new, full Infinity Ward-developed PC Call of Duty game being released every two years. "

    So be freaking patient and wait geez ... although I would also be royally pissed if they completely leave COD on PC behind the next time around.

    For those of you who like numbers, All PC versions of COD got over 8.8/10 on Gamespot. Only the most recent COD2 on XBOX360 (8.8/10) got better than a 7/10. So I don't get where consoles create more money for Activision based on this. perhaps activision felt like it let down consoles and wants to put its efforts in giving them a solid console-only.

    medal of honor is your best bet until the next COD on PC.

    HAH next gen consoles, dont make me laugh. PC's will ALWAYS rain supreme over consoles anyway all spin- off games suck period. look at Far Cry Instincts what a sad piece of **** game that was. Fear not PC gamers Direct x 10 will be here soon and all consoles can suck my cock and weep at the true next gen graphics that games like Crysis will provide.

    WHY NOT the pc is the best for FPS not the console
    the console is for RPG or racing game NOT FPS
    and call of duty have a lost of player on pc than the console if you say why just because the control is NOT the same on console VS pc the pc have the best control for all FPS in the world all COD player need the COD 3 on pc if they not create a COD 3 on pc they go to loose a lot of player and buyer

    I find it surprising that the sales of call of duty 3 on PC would be sooooooooooooo bad it would send em broke and make the bank repo their house and then make debt collectors come after them making them pay back all their loans and stuff.
    I suppose we can grump and moan about it all we want, but in the end it is their game, and if they dont want us to join in, then we will just find a new friend, like Medal of Honour : Airborne.

    i wouldnt' say giving up but yes money is the ultimate goal. would you produce something that costs millions of dollars on a system thats been falling in game sales for the past 5 or 6 years? and risk your life (as in not being able to pay for your home, food, car, family, etc) just so you can make a bunch of people you dont know happy for a few weeks with your game? i wouldn't. i know it must suck but thats just the way it is. i like pcs for fps but there hasn't really been any good releases lately so i'll be playing 360 games from now on and come back to pc for big releases (like half lifes and crysis)

    Funny how they call it 'next gen' you watch soon there will be Quad core processors for the PC with next gen directx 10 video cards that will urinate all over consoles like the PS3 and 360. Pffft consoles... Tekken, GT, yes, FPS... Hell no!!!

    After reading through many of the reader comments, I find it rather both funny to amusing how quite a few console "fanboys" (yes I being derogatory towards them) are hating on or trying to put down the PC and PC gaming in general.......yet seem to show an "envy" towards such PC gaming franchises like HL2, F.E.A.R. or even WoW. You fanboys might want to realise that if it weren't for the PC and the PC gaming industy, there really wouldn't be much of a console gaming industry either! Many games nowadays are developed via the PC (for both PC and console) and it is PC hardware/technology that drives the industry, not vice-versa. Don't believe? Then why do more and more of the next-gen consoles seem to be getting more PC like? Yes talk about the irony! You might also want to add that the Xbox series creator Microsoft, is also the world's largest PC software company. I am pretty sure it's in their interest that the PC gaming industy is still around for many years to come.

    Yes the Wii believe it or not is the most creative and progressive console, I don't have anything against the xbox360 or PS3 but they didn't do something new or creative in fact, they just beefed up the consoles so we get better graphics. And yes the only good FPS games are available on the Pc and are much better and have better sound quality and graphics than those compared to the consoles, I mean common the only good and not so great FPS game for the consoles is Halo and it's not the best thing, HL2 owns Halo any day and any hour.

    And yes we still have hope that Acticision will make a real COD3 game for the PC.

    For a start Ive been a pc gamer for years BUT.....P.C's are too expensive to keep upgrading, the 360 graphics are better than pc (smoother etc)(I own both platforms and will be dropping my pc for an apple) some of us can use both keyboard and mouse as well as a controller, we havent even seen the 360 pushed to its full potential. The console is more socialble (split screen, having ya mates round for a bash and only needing one machine) etc etc etc, GOODBYE pc gaming, this is start of the end!

    This is a very dangerous move for the game, pc gaming is a very big thing, pcs have the power, the upgrade ability and the graphics of a console, using a joypad for a fps is dreadful and clumsy, not pushing it out to all audiences is a bad move, also pc games can host more online abliity than a console. Also this is not the decent of pc gaming, no way, we have alot more to come yet, as long as there are pcs there will be pc games. And there will always be pcs. And anyway, notice the best titles are on the pc?

    aiming a gun with a gamepad blows. if they would allow keyboard and mouse support i might go for it. well it's coming out for the wii maybe if no pc, that's the way to go.

    Well I have COD 2 on both my PC and my 360 I have a high end PC but the game was stunning on the 360 I downloaded the 360 demo and the graphics where far better it just had a certain feel that the PC version did not have so I promptly bought the full game for my 360. Not bothered in the slightest that COD 3 is primarly being designed for the 360 thats what platform I'm now wanting to buy it on.
