E3 06: Ubisoft bears Enchanted Arms

From Software's Japanese Xbox 360 role-playing game headed for North America and Europe this summer.

Microsoft has been making a concerted effort to get more Japanese developers working on the Xbox 360, and word arrived today that European and North American gamers will get a chance to see one of the earliest results of that push firsthand. Ubisoft has announced that it will be publishing From Software's role-playing game Enchanted Arms (released in Japan earlier this year under the unwieldy title [eM] -eNCHANT arM-) internationally this summer.

While playing through the more than 50 hours of gameplay in Enchanted Arms (with a full hour of anime-style cutscenes), players will attempt to discover more than 75 controllable creatures while fending off attackers in turn-based battles. Ubisoft is heralding the title as the first, next-generation Japanese RPG.

No price or ratings information has been announced. For more on Enchanted Arms, check out GameSpot's hands-on impressions with an early version of the game.

A non-First person game on Xbox 360? I think I'll die of a heart attack! (Note: I actually enjoy the 360 games I have emesly, but don't feel as immersed in the story when I cannot see the avatar's facial expressions).

This game is going to do well here in the states and europe. I've been watching out for a release date here, now I can look forward to summer. It's not going to do big like Oblivion but xbox owners have been J-RPG starved for a long time so this is huge.

i don't like western RPGs like Oblivion because I don't think action type gameplay should be mixed with RPG. if I want a good action game I play Ninja Gaiden. The action is just not done right and it also means u only control 1 character which removes alot of strategy from the battle. Zelda is the only game I've played that has a good balance between action-adventure and RPG.

360 needs more original Rpgs like Oblivion, and less rehashes of old Rpgs; If it plans to try and really capture a Rpg adoring audience

They should release this game on PS3 instead, not for 360, if they want to sell BIG, and not floping around.

yay, bring the japaneese flopper to the states where it will do very well, imo

That is best news I have heard since the Oblivion release date. This is my second most anticipated game (besides Oblivion of course)...Gears of War is a very close third. :-)

I was hoping this game would make it, but on a side note Gamestop had this game listed on their site last week as coming out this Summer (June I think...), but it is great to have an official word!!!

Now to just wait it out...well luckily I have Oblivion to keep me occupied. :-)

Well I guess they have to try,...but I kinda like the XBox being different by "not' being like the other and being mostly Japanese style games.Noting against the games,..just nice to have something be different once and while.

Bring it tp PS3 and they will sell a million copies.....
1st the PS3 isnt released yet
2nd there are millions of "xbox people" that love JRPG.
so what makes you think that will not sell on 360!

  • mickel_darmawan

    Posted May 1, 2006 11:18 pm PT

they should make this for PS3 instead. Or their materpiece will be flop.

"i don't see it'll make a difference for this game will probably be available for ps3 later on anyway
not to mention a slew of other ps3 exclusives "

And the article has nothing to do with PS3, but as usual, there's always one dorkola to throw this in out of sheer insecurity of his yet to be released system of choice.

Yes this is one the games tha I wanted to get when I first got a 360 and was bummed out to see that it was only coming out in japan.

  • noxian

    Posted May 1, 2006 8:40 pm PT

for what its worth though, part of why this game didn't help the 360 at all in Japan is it got horrible reviews. pretty much across the board the feeling was that MS paid From to make a clone of Final Fantasy. Some reviewers even remarked that some of the maps looked like rips from the FF games.

This is great news. eM has been a game I've really been looking forward to ever since its announcement. Good for Ubi for coming through to allow N.A. and European gamers to play it. The game has some real potential.

SpamMeGamespot, i dont think thats true, look at Disgaea on the PS2, LOTS of sidequests, i've played it for over 100 hours (im a SRPG nerd lol).
But this is awesome news! I seriously wanted this game sooo badly. The xbox 360 needs more J-RPG's, even if they arent Traditional, its good to see Japanese developers havent even come close to give up yet.

75 controllable creatures, turn based battles, sounds like a Strategy RPG more than a true RPG. They aren't terribly similar apart from "leveling up." Strategy RPGs tend to have less story, no side quests and little to distinguish a GBA version from a 360 version besided shinier graphics and cutscenes.

Illumination77 - "....if that's true then why does Sony sell so well despite not havign a single innovative or original tital for any of it's consoles?"

Yeah, guess Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, and Guitar Hero were some of the most non-original and non-innovative titles of 2005. Tool.

  • Jxy

    Posted May 1, 2006 7:19 pm PT

Hmm... actually, wouldn't this mark the first Japanese RPG on a MS console in the US? It's about damn time.

  • Vicious-sama

    Posted May 1, 2006 7:03 pm PT

Then go back to playing Oblivion.

    Anyway, from what I heard from people, this is really just a mediocre game with a mediocre story covererd with shiney new graphics. But hey, it's always a good sign that people are brining over JRPG's ( My favorite genre) to the 360. I promise to buy a 360 if this game gets a 9 rating on gamespot. ;_;

ahh japanese rpgs. Those were real good back in the days weren't they?
Yep , I have real good memories of the times i spent with those. The one that got me hooked was Final Fantasy 2 (forgot what number it was in Japan maybe 4?) , and it was good. Lufia was good also and many more but... Well the thing is we are not in those days anymore and archaic menus just don't cut it anymore. It feels like those games had to be menu driven because of the systems capabilities and that was good for then , great even but not anymore.
they honestly need to evolve. I'm to the point that the only two Rpg's that excite me are the upcoming Zelda and the now released Oblivion. Yep Final Fantasy 12 is not in the list because Sqare needs to serioulsy prove themselves. Good thing Oblivion is long. By the way World of Warcraft hooked me for like 3 months and then oblivion came out. Have not gone back to wow since then. Oblivion is just so much more immersing even without real people playing with you.
