Battlestar Galactica game under consideration

Series creator Ronald D. Moore tells the Hollywood Reporter he's toying with the idea of an RPG based on the hit TV series.

Ronald D. Moore likes games--that has been known for months. Why else would the creator of Battlestar Galactica, the popular and now Peabody Award-winning Sci Fi Network series, deliver a keynote speech at the 2006 Game Developers Conference last month?

That said, Moore's session at the event only tangentially touched on games. Instead, its focus was on how to turn an existing franchise in a new direction. For Moore, that meant turning a semi-campy 1970s TV show into arguably the most critically acclaimed science fiction series since Star Trek: The Next Generation.

This week, nerds' heads exploded when reports began to surface that Moore is considering a game based on Battlestar Galactica. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that he "is looking to delve deeper into video games as a further extension of the franchise."

Specifically, Moore told the Reporter he had toyed with the idea of a Galactica role-playing game "with Internet participation." And though he did not mention any concrete plans, Moore did underscore than any such game would not be a mere tie-in, like the PlayStation 2 and Xbox game that debuted alongside the 2003 Battlestar Galactica miniseries. That VU Games-published, Warthog-developed title was based more on the 1970s series than the remake, and scored only lukewarm reviews.

"You're forced to make a choice with a Galactica game in defining what's fun," he said. "Is it about experiencing the first season, navigating from the miniseries up to [the episode] 'Kobol's Last Gleaming'? Or is it doing something that's going off into uncharted territory but taking it further away from the reason you watch the show in the first place?"

Moore also credited games for conditioning audiences for more complex narratives in television shows. "It's been a bit of a surprise to people involved in studios and networks...[that] the audience is willing to immerse themselves in these environments," he said.

I haven't seen a good space sim since the Decent: Freespace games or Independence War 2.

As a matter of fact, I still have those games. Great space sims with great stories to tell. Can't get any better than that.

Battlestar Galactica has such a profound storyline that a well-developed RPG would be the perfect fit. Hope its multi-platform.

Can you imagine an RPG based on Galactica. Finaly a successor to Wing Commander. There just hasn't been a game with that kind of operatic feel with the exception of The Ultima series. Oh I know there will be those who say the Final Fantasy anthology is GOD. Wing Commander however was more like Babylon 5 huge story, lots of charactors, but still retained a personal touch. Let's hope for ton's of unlockables like playing with original ships or missions that predate the start of the series.

Speaking of Battlestar Galactica, I just realized the other day that I live in the same apartment building as Tricia Helfer, one of the stars of the show. I was riding up in the elevator with her and I thought she looked really familiar. But it wasn't until later that I recognized her as being Gina from Galactica. She's also hosting Canada's Next Top Model this year.

RPG or not...they better through in space battles where you can fly the fighters into the swarms of Cylon fighters and make all the tight turns they show the fighters making in the show. If they want a BG game to take off they should focus on that factor.

Sounds like it may be a good game I just hope they don't follow the story of the T.v show to closely. That all ways seems tyo happen and tends to make a bad game.

Personally they totally ruined a great show. Still cannot get used to the fact that Starbuck and Boomer are female now. Now instead of fun Sci Fi it is all angst this and drama that. The original was far more fun.

I wish they would make a space sim instead of an RPG. Some of my favorite games ever were mission-based starfighter sims (Wing Commander, Tie Fighter, etc.), but there hasn't been a really good one since Freespace 2. Maybe a good BSG game could make the genre popular again.

If you haven't seen this show, you absolutely must rent /buy the season 1 DVD set (which includes the 4-hour mini-series)! There is a reason many critics has called this the best show on TV. It has absolutely surpassed my scepticism I had when I heard there was going to be girl-cylons! :-)

Seriously, for Scifi fans, its a no-brianer. [read: cliffhangers] But for those that are moderate fans, this show has the pacing and suspense of "24" and drama as good as or better than CSI, ER, or Lost.

    Seriously, watch it now!!!

I also want to add that it's great to see more from Ron Moore. With Star Trek: TNG, DS9, the early seasons of Voyager, and now Battlestar Galactica, he is the current king of sci-fi. Always cool to chat with him, one of the few people, of any medium, who would listen to fans.
