Darwinia scores top IGF award

Real-time strategy survives tough competition, proves the fittest contender for top prize in independent game awards.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--The Game Developers Choice Awards weren't the only hardware handed out in San Jose last night. The 2006 Independent Games Festival Awards were also given to celebrate the achievements of developers working without the financial backing of a major publisher.

The sci-fi real-time strategy game Darwinia took home top honors for the night, winning the Seumas McNally Grand Prize, Technical Excellence, and Innovation in Visual Art categories. Dad 'n Me, Braid, Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space, and Dofus also received accolades in one category each.

The eighth annual awards show was organized and hosted by the CMP Game Group (producer of Game Developer and Gamasutra), and GameSpot pitched in by hosting the voting for the Audience Award. Free demo versions of all nominated games are still available on GameSpot and can be easily accessed from the IGF Audience Award page.

I still have yet to play Darwinia's demo... It's been sitting there on my desktop... Mocking me... Actually all my strategy games are mocking me right now. Even Civ4. It's that damned RPG genre, come back with a vengeance.

Darwinia rocks! It's one of the best ways to kill time on a crappy system! Put it on your laptop, bring it to work, play it after having sex, it's ALL good.

    PEACE

Hurrah for those guys at Introversion!
Darwinia really is a modern classic, the gameplay is quite addictive but it's the artwork that really makes it stand out. I haven't seen such a unique game in ages.

And probably won't for quite a while.

Glad to see Dad 'n Me won. It's a fairly fun game and Tom Fulp + Behemoth should continue to keep up the good work.

I love that game. I'm really happy for them. 2 guys in a bedroom for a couple of years... no Electronic Arts involved... the reason I got into games.

Darwinia seems like a great game. If I was still into RTS games (other than B&W2), I might get it. 8.5 is a great score.

Hmm Darwinia sounds like all the "pro's" loved it, yet it only scored an 8.5 on Gamespot. Is it really worth buying?
