Activision readying one Revolution, three PS3 launch titles

Publisher's April 2006-March 2007 schedule includes three games for Sony's next-gen machine, one for Nintendo's; Xbox 360 gets quartet while PSP takes five.

After reporting disappointing 2005 holiday earnings today, Activision executives held a conference call to talk about their plans for the future. As the company cited the ongoing transition from current-generation platforms to next-generation consoles as a major factor for its lower-than-expected profits, executives were eager to tell the Wall Street analysts participating in the call about their plans for the new crop of machines.

In its 2007 fiscal year, which runs from April 2006 to March 2007, Activision will "remain committed to maintaining a leadership position on next-generation platforms," said Activision publishing president and CEO Michael Griffith. Griffith said that, during those 12 months, his company plans to release five PSP titles and four Xbox 360 titles--one of which will be the just-announced multiplatform X-Men: The Official Movie Game (working title). More importantly, he revealed that Activision is planning to ship three PlayStation 3 launch titles and one Revolution launch title during that period. The revelation is further confirmation that both consoles will almost certainly launch by year's end, most likely in November.

Though Activision didn't name its PS3 and Revolution titles, it's likely that they will be based on existing properties. Stung by the less-than-stellar reception of its all-new IP, Gun, which Griffith admitted "performed below our expectations," the publisher said that "fiscal 2007 will be a year of caution and investment as we manage through the remainder of the transition and focus resources to prepare for accelerated growth in the next cycle." In other words, the publisher will be relying on its stable of tried-and-true franchises, which includes Call of Duty and Quake.

Ironically, Activision did identify some of the games set for release during its 2008 fiscal year (April 2007-March 2008). Those will include tie-ins for the films Shrek 3 and Spider-Man 3, as well as new titles based on the adventures of skater extraordinaire Tony Hawk and the X-Men comics and films. No specific platforms were mentioned, but given that all next-generation consoles will have been on the market for months, it is almost certain the four franchises will be appearing on either the PS3, the Revolution, or the Xbox 360--or on all three.

xeidog69 point well taken about games being same ol same ol but thats what I like, i like resident evil, twisted metal, shooter games because they are the same just different twists on enemies and storyline, people do not want new things because sometimes new is not better, but improved on the game is always better, improved means better

    And:

" WHAT?! Nothing announced for DS? What is Activision thinking? .... Oh yeah, they can rehash whatever PS2 game they have released and make it a PSP game, but DS takes some REAL CREATIVITY.... That's why they are not announcing anything for DS. ..... GUN failed because it is a GTA for cowboys."

Did you not see the part about the REVOLUTION title? The Revolution contains a lot more innovative features that require a lot more creativity than the DS.

If the Revolution title is based off an existing property I'm gonna be pissed, especially if it's a Tony Hawk port >_>

I like Activision. Sure, they commit to some movie-license fluff, but rarely does Activision release substandard games. And this is actually the same Activision that goes back, you know, like 30 years. Activision pre-dates EA, Ubisoft, you name it. Unlike Atari which is just french Infogrames with a new name and has NOTHING to do with the original Atari, Activision is primarily the same US company that brought Pitfall into your home decades ago. They also have the best retention of executives, PR and marketing staff of any major publisher...'cause apparently it's a decent place to work.

sorry about the double post, i hate when that happens. by the way pc's rock the house, i really want a quad sli rig, with dual double core prossecors, and yes, more than 512 of ram(if you were wondering yes i'm ripping on the consoles). thank you, to bad i don't have a job, i'll settle for my current config.

    peace.

i personally like the xbox, why, i reason it as a good budget pc, and the revoltuion will ge sweat because it has all that true consoly goodnees. i do however find the playstations, 1 and 2, and most likely 3 to be the bastard childs of a great corpratemachine that ultimately offers it's consumers way over priced hardware. i would like to point out that two generations later sony will finally launch a system with more than two controller ports(they had more than two right, jk, they are wireless) to bad they're controlers still uniformally suck. the only reason sony gets any good games is because developing for it is really cheap. that is also why playstations have the most crappy games for them.

Well it's good to here the support for Revolution. I wonder what game it could be though.... regardless it's looking rosy for both PS3 and Revolution. Luckily for me I'm getting all three, though still not 100% convinced on X360. Must say though that a decent original title Gun didn't do so well compared to some of the lamer rehashes of familiar licences and stuff is a lil sad. Oh well.... Mainstream will alway be mainstream I guess.... sadly people still don't like to think outside of the square.... SMH. One of the main reason that's preventing game developers from gambling and being more creative.

  • Bathyj

Isn't it funny how people always complain about too many sequels and not enough original content yet a game like Gun fails and the company has to rely on franchises just to stay afloat. Next time you complain about sequels realise its our fault as much as theirs. We control what sells. Personally I like sequels. Each one is usually better than the one before it (unlike the movie industry) and making videogames is a process of refinement, meaning they (hopefully) build on a good original concept, cutting out the bad, injecting more good. Grand Theft Auto 9 on PS5 is gonna be sweet. I'll be 40 by then and lovin' it.

P.S. You don't win friends with salad!

From what I hear pre-orders will be available Feb. 22 , if and only if ,Sony finally announces a Japanese date for the system, which is expected to be december.

  • boolow407

    Posted Feb 6, 2006 9:56 pm PT

Everyone else see what I see? "The revelation is almost further confirmation that both systems will ALMOST certainly launch by years end, MOST LIKELY in November." Maybe im reading into it too much. We all know that the Revo wont make its appearance until then, but whats all the hype about PS3 launching in spring about? Its already Feb. and still no word from Sony. It will of course be launched in Japan first, but they havent done so yet UNLESS they are gonna launch worldwide. Another thing. I havent heard anything on a 299 or 599 bundle preorder from gamestop for a PS3. A VERY few gameCRAZY's (Hollywood videos game store) are taking preorders for the PS3. The minimum deposit is 50 bucks, and they are "blank" pre orders, but will guarantee your name at the top of the list when they start taking pre-orders officially. Kinda like a pre-preorder. He couldnt say when the official pre-orders where gonna be taken,or even an official launch. I was gonna do it, but I want more info on the PS3 first.(weak launch line up and other nasty rumors squashed)ALSO BEWARE OF IDIOTS ON EBAY TAKING PREORDERS!!! If you are dumb enough to fall for that you deserve to get ripped off. Scam artists are taking preorders on Ebay for 10-20 bucks. When you recieve nothing, Ebay charges 25 to investigate, meaning you are out the money, reguardless. That is why the pre-orders from those clowns is so low. Imagine if they got 100 idiots to send them 20 bucks. Thats 2K they made. Also think-If Best buy or gamestop(the pre-order kings) arent taking preorders yet,why are these people doing it?
