Dragon Ball Z making PSP debut

Atari to unleash anime scrapper on Sony's handheld in March; Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai will feature wireless multiplayer battles.

Dragon Ball Z fever has hit gamers hard. The brand has punched out dozens of games on several platforms and recently battled for the first time on the DS with Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2. Now the series is making its debut on another handheld, the PSP.

Atari today announced that Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai will be released this March. The game will feature 18 playable characters and will follow in the fighting footsteps of its forebears. Included will be counterattacks, high-speed bouts, and seven game modes. In addition to featuring a single-player story mode, the game will include a wireless multiplayer mode that lets gamers battle each other head-to-head.

Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai is being developed by Dimps, the same company behind previous Dragon Ball Z games. Rating and pricing information have not yet been released.

All you people complaining about 18 characters need to realize that the game will feature in game transformations. Budokai Tenkaichi had 60 characters because each transformation was counted as a seperate character, it's easy to get 60 characters when you have 4 Goku's, 4 Vegeta's and so forth. 18 truly diffferent characters is fine with me and unlike Tenkaichi (which isn't even a real Budokai game) this game won't be developed by Spike. Dimps the makers of Budokai 3 (one of the best fighters in my opinion) are developing this game so I'm really confident it'll turn out good.

Im mad that this Budokai game has wireless play. How come the console games didnt have online play. Thats the stupidity Im talking about. With over 50 characters they could of made an online mode.

Quite your whining.18 characters is more than enough.Keep in mind that they aren't counting the various different forms of the characters. So as long as they include SSJ4 Vegeta,Im happy.

Who know? It could be alright. Hopefully when it comes out there will be more than 18 characters.

18 Characters isnt that bad for a fighting game, I mean, going from 50 to 18 is kind of bad, but it isnt really a sequel to the console versions, its Dimps trying somthing new by putting it on the PSP and seeing what they can do with it, The Average fighting game on the PSP has about 12 Characters I believe, so be greatful to get the 18. I am personally gonna wait for some screenshots from this game, but if it was a hybrid of Tenkaichi and B3 then I would be very greatful. The only thing I thought Tenkaichi was lacking was the actual skill capsules and transforming in battles, if Shin Budokai could throw those into the Tenkaichi fighting engine, I think it would make a great game, if people were to actually give it a chance.

At last, Iīve been waiting for this.
It doesīnt matter if itīs only 18 characters, as long as the game is fun to play.

I hope they pick the best elements of both and take the flaws of each into account. And from what I have read, it looks like it. May just buy this fighter for the psp. Even though I've kinda grown out of this show, the fighting is still cool. So long as they have 17 and a decent game I'll buy it.

    Pixels for my people.

Hmm, I must admit, I had some fun with the budokai series of games and I consider them to be some of the better anime to game translations to come out in a while... so handheld budokai sounds like something worth looking at eh? Now all i have to get it a PSP to play it on

I don't have a Psp but I did used to own Budokai 1 & 2 (which SUCKED) and I traded them in. Handheld Dragon Ball Z games suck...it's natural 18 characters is just bogus, god. The only reason most people even played Tenkaichi was probably cause of the characters. May I be the first to say "Duh!" to Dimps.

Hopefully, it will play like Budokai 3. That game is awesome. And 18 characters? Quality is better than quantity. But we'll see if it delivers on that or not. ( Just don't give me another Budokai 2 )

    I agree with raichu

    raichu79
If it plays like Budokai 2 I'll get it. If it plays like Tenkaichi i wouldn't piss on it to put the flames out.

I've been watching this game very closely, and I know it's going to move people whom are either returning or new to the Budokai world, from what I've seen Gamespot will have to crank up their rating system.

Wow this is the saddest milking of a franchise I have EVER seen... 18 characters?!? Haha, the only reason a DBZ game is worth buying is for the characters because everything else about the pretty much sucks. And that's less characters than even Budokai 1, which was a flaming pile of ****.

  • LCY

    Posted Feb 4, 2006 3:58 am GMT

Shin Budokai? Maybe be good, considering that Tenkaichi was not a Budokai game(Sparkling!). While it is returning to the Budokai roots, the 18 only cast is going to hurt a lot of people, and the company...

  • henrybabbage

    Posted Feb 4, 2006 2:38 am GMT

Yeah it better be 3D, not like the DS Dragon Ball Z game..but 18 Characters isn't much..-_-
Could be cool though, the Budokai series has been making alot of progress/improvements lately

Remembering the SNES games and how you could fight on the ground and the sky, I always tought DBZ would make more/perfect sense on the DS's dual screens. It will probably feel old.
