Wi-Fi Tetris blocking DS March 20

Nintendo announces new touch-sensitive spin on classic puzzle game compatible with its wireless network.

After long dismissing online play as not being central to gaming, Nintendo is fast becoming one of Web-enabled multiplayer's biggest boosters. Today, the Japanese game giant announced the latest game that will be playable via its wireless gaming network, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

But while the game itself is new, it is also the latest spin on a very old-school brand. The title in question is Tetris DS, a reworked edition of the 1985 Soviet puzzle game. It will add six new modes to Tetris' classic block-combination gameplay, all of which will incorporate the DS's second, touch-sensitive screen.

Each new mode of Tetris DS will have a theme based on a popular Nintendo property like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid. There will also be several multiplayer modes, including two- or four-player contests over the Wi-Fi Connection. For ad hoc bouts, up to 10 players will be able to play a single multiplayer match using just one copy of the game.

Tetris DS is set for release on March 20, the same day as the highly anticipated, wireless-enabled Metroid Prime: Hunters. The pair will join three other games on Nintendo's Wi-Fi-Connection: Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing DS, and Tony Hawk's American Sk8land. No pricing or rating for the game has been announced.

If they make a mode similar to Tetris Attack, I know my wife will be into it, and let's face it....any game that gets your girlfriend/wife interested in gaming is always a good thing!

Oooh, and apparantly, this game is being Developed inhouse by Nintendo itself. At least, that's what they're saying on the forums. Although I don't see why Nintendo would ever let THQ publish their games. Nevertheless, an online tetris game is a Godsend for the Nintendo DS. It'll most likely stomp Lumines if they do it right.

The Boxart already looks awesome, and reminiscent of the original Tetris NES/GB boxart. I wonder if this is a hint of another handheld revolution like there was in 1989, Metroid coming out on the same day to boot.

its no surprise that nintendo would like a tetris game on DS, after all it was the game that originally gave the gameboy its houshold name.

    Wow!!
I just got home from a really crappy day at work. And the first gaming news of the day I hear is a new Tetris!! Then I see DS, then online, then Mario, Metroid, Zelda themes. OMG this is gonna rock.

Then to top it all off, a March release!

Time to start a March DS fund.

    Nintendo ftw!!

Mmmmmm. =) I still play Tetris all the time. Online competition... >=) If it's more than $15 I'll pass, but if it is priced reasonably, you can watch hopelessly as you are defeated this March.

THQ is publishing, not developing. It says n/a for developer. Hey touch screen tetris sounds freakin' awesome, I don't know what's wrong with everyone. But online play! This is a great announcement, and a very pleasant surprise. As long as the dev.'s don't butcher the classic tetris formula with gimmicks, I will be buying this. Hello online play, hello, hello, hello.

Meh, it's a puzzle game, big whoop. The only worthwhile puzzle game I've ever played was Meteos (which OWNED, btw). I'm not gunna get this, although it's good to see that Nintendo is making lots of games online. To be perfectly honest though, seeing as how this game is releasing the same day as Metroid Prime Hunters, anyone who chooses to buy the Tetris online game instead of the Metroid online game deserves to be slapped with an unusually large rubber glove!

Finally. I've been craving some classic Tetris for over a year. Maybe one of the modes will be similar to tetrinet. Now that would be great. [raises a mug o' root beer float] Here's to some great portable Tetris.

I'm interested to see what properties they choose for the themed boards. Could be cool. Actually, it'd probably be the only thing convincing me to buy another version of Tetris.

I wasn't too excited about this until I read the multiplayer bit. I LOVED the 4-player matches in the N64 Tetris. I get those online now! Awesome. Wait... 10 players with one game card locally?!?!?!? Sign me up!
