Liberty City Stories PS2-bound by May, next GTA PSP "all new"

[UPDATE] Take-Two announces that its best-selling PSP game is coming to Sony's current-generation console; hints next handheld edition might be original.

As part of its earnings report today, Take-Two Interactive made a rather surprising announcement. While announcing the roster of games for its 2006 fiscal year, which ends on October 31, 2006, the company revealed it is porting a PSP game to a "current-generation console."

It doesn't take a Wall Street game analyst to guess that the title is Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, the most popular PSP game to date. According to Take-Two, which owns GTA publisher Rockstar Games, the game will be released on a "current-generation console" during the company's second quarter, which ends on April 30, 2006.

However, since Take-Two did not specify which console the game would be coming to, it has opened up the floodgates of speculation. [UPDATE] However, the scuttlebutt was scuppered by comments by Take-Two CEO and president Paul Eibler during a post-earnings announcement conference call. In that call, he told analysts, "We are very pleased that we have been able to extend Liberty City Stories into the PS2 environment."

In other news, Take-Two also announced that the next PSP GTA, first revealed last year, would be an "all-new property." The company did not specify whether that means it will be a new adventure set in an old locale, like LCS was, or a completely original game and setting.

Just give me San Andreas Stories! That would be cool. They just want to make more money. So there Porting the PSP version back to the PS2. So it a good move, and it will sell. The Next GTA PSP title needs to be a original property.

This at first sounded like a good idea cuz others without a PSP would be able to play GTA:LCS. But that very same reason is why the whole thing is a bad idea. LCS's exclusivity on the PSP proved to critics that there are original games being made for the PSP and not every good game has to be a port. Guess I can scrap that argument.

GTA Tokyo? Don't think so. How about GTA:Motor City? You know, Detroit.
Don't comment if you've never been there.

Hmmm, do you not think that it is dangerous to speculate that the game in question will be LCS? Until we have an official announcement, maybe it would be safer to think that Midnight Club 3 will be coming soon to a DS near you

... Greaaaat, now GTA fans won't have to buy a PSP to get their GTA fix. Kinda stupid thing to do...

Now um..why did I get the PSP? Oh yeah, Lumines. Anyway when this game comes out I'll make sure to sell my PSP version of Liberty City Stories to get the Improved PS2 version and as for the new GTA PSP I hope that it will be: Vice City Stories, San Andreas Stories, or in Tokyo. Actually Tokyo would be the best one. Please R* make GTA: Tokyo, if not for the PSP then at least for the next-gen consoles.

Well, I was hoping for another GTA with a black guy in it but oh well. Not my fault R* is a bunch of racists.

    Robio_basic,

How is that a smack in the face to the PSP? Rockstar is making another exclusive 'original' GTA title for PSP. If you've got a PSP and havent play LCS yet, thats your problem.

F'n Right! I was actually thinking about saving for a PSP and grab a PS3 much later but hey if LCS is comming to the PS2 I'll stick to my plans to save for a PS3 !

    C'mon Xbox port!

This is a bit of a slap to the PSP, but keep in mind that Take-Two is still trying to jump back after the Hot Coffee thing, so it's a smart move.

Dont u think it would be great to have GTA: Tokyo Yakusa. Yes iam talking to all of u. How many of u like import tuners. How many of u actually went to tokyo???? Imagine driving all those sick imports IN JAPAN around Mt. Fuji. Wat if they added a features u were never able to do like Bus and garbage truck missions. They always had those vehicles BUT NO MISSIONS.

maybe because its a handheld and you can take it with you thats what they are for, you cant do that so easily with consoles... so gta:lsc still wont be obsolete on the psp.

  • Thrallia

    Posted Jan 6, 2006 12:30 pm GMT

of course, this just adds more fuel to the anti PSP fire...the only, thus far exclusive PSP Title to sell very well and suddenly it isn't exclusive either....why pay 250 bucks for a handheld that doesn't have any good games you can't play on a console?

  • 24_KarroTz

    Posted Jan 6, 2006 12:19 pm GMT

Probably PS2 because that's where all their money is at. the game for the PSP is pretty good but just the PSP alone made the game boring and the controls were pretty bad, im waiting for the next sony handheld to be amazing.

When they said "current generation console", which one did they mean. PS2, xbox or xbox 360, PS3?? Posted 01/06/2006 2:03pm "

Quote for article: "We are very pleased that we have been able to extend Liberty City Stories into the PS2 environment."

technically speaking, i don't think the 360 and the ps3 can be classified as current gen...especially since the ps3 isn't out yet.

they'll probably release it on ps2 then 6 months later release it on xbox

I don't think it's a matter of they need more money...I think it's more along the lines of more people have ps2's than psp's...sure they always want more money but I think it's more of a way to get a ps2 gta out in the gap between SA and next gen gta. :-) Can't wait!

Wow, so the sequel to San Andreas on the PS2 is going to be a remixed GTA3? With less features than San Andreas?

    Good call.

I like how they clarify "all new" by saying that it might be another "revisited" like LCS, but why not get your hopes up?

  • emorule

    Posted Jan 6, 2006 9:06 am GMT

What the hell is the point. I mean i got it on PSP knowing that it was like gta3 but now there putting it on PS2. Take 2 is really greedy. And i bet it will cost full price, when it should be cheap!

  • yon321

    Posted Jan 6, 2006 8:26 am GMT

Ah well...i got a PSP for christmas and the only reason i really wanted it was for GTA LCS and i thought it sucked completely compared to GTA San Andreas...it was just GTA3 but with a different main character, new missions and motorbikes. I wasn't very impressed. Although i still have high hopes for the next GTS PSP and if and when GTA LCS is ported to the PS2 i may buy it if R* at least add a few new features to it otherwise that'll suck too.
Oh and i can't wait for next gen GTA although i don't own an Xbox 360 yet...but i'll definitely buy a PlayStation 3 for it.
