PSP Splinter Cell to have "prequel aspect"

Ubisoft confirms Sam Fisher's debut on Sony's portable will deal with the superspy's past--in part, anyway.

Yesterday, rumors wafted across the Atlantic from francophone fanzine Jeux-France.com. In a typically brief article, the site said that Ubisoft had confirmed that Splinter Cell Essentials, the franchise's first foray on the PSP, would be a prequel--meaning it would be an all-new title, not just a tweaked port. Specifically, Essentials would "explain the origins of Fisher," according to Jeux-France, which said the information was confirmed by French Ubisoft officials.

As it turns out, the Essentials-prequel rumor was partially true. Ubisoft reps confirmed to GameSpot that Splinter Cell Essentials would indeed include a "prequel aspect." The rep declined to elaborate what exactly the "aspect" would entail, but did say that "it definitely is not the primary focus" of the game.

The Ami-Ubi disclosure raises the possibility that Splinter Cell Essentials could be a tweaked port of a PlayStation 2 title, a la Prince of Persia Revelations. That game was a miniaturized version of the PS2 Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, with some new content added and several levels reworked.

So what exactly will Splinter Cell Essentials be? Ubisoft isn't saying--yet. "We are preparing to make an official announcement and will give more details very soon," said the rep.

i like the psp but i think that if its only goin to be a miniaturized game, then forget about it. They need a different story line for the psp

My god, another re-hashed game, from a console game. New lvls, some new elements, but no Sam Fisher, chin hair!!!

I found the final level in Chaos Theory to be the easiest, with the bath house one being the hardest.

PeteDee do you know how to read, the story says it will have to do with the past which means new game. the possibility is still there for a tweaked port but i doubt it

You become Sam Fisher in training. I wonder if someone (a wife, mentor, family) should die and push Sam toward...

It'll probably be liek that Hitman game. While in prison before the jail break or whuile he is in deep depression his mind wanders off to the good ol days and we play in flashbacks.

So another "reworked" psp game then? can no one make a truely original game that isn't just a port?

I got the original SC then skipped Pandora tomorrow to get Chaos theory. I have played Pandora tomorrow, and it wasn't as good mainly because the voice acting wasn't worth $h!7. Except for Ironside who does Fisher. I know, the bank level was probably the coolest and the easiest.

Anyways This looks like it will be really interesting. I initially thought they might be doing a port of double agent, but this will be awesome, a SC exclusive for US PSP owners!!!

Hopefully there won't be any cards!

The Splinter Cell story is actually a great one. I just can't get enough of Sam because hes such a unique hero. Hes gotta unique personality. I really recommend reading the two Splinter Cell novels out. I'm not a reader by no means, but it really is some great stuff. Its going to have a good story if Tom Clancy puts his name on it.

Hopefully the PSP gameplay will be an improvement upon the lackluster DS controls.

I don't play Splinter Cell for the story... I waited for Chaos Theory to jump in because I play it for the gameplay.
