Advent Children DVD flies off Japanese shelves

Square Enix's Final Fantasy spin-off tops the weekly retail charts, pricey limited edition package takes third place.

Square Enix's last foray into Final Fantasy filmmaking was something of a dud, but the company's Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is hitting it big in Japan. According to the Oricon weekly sales chart, the DVD release sold 195,000 units to earn top place for the first week of its release. It also tallied as the third-highest first-week DVD sales of the year.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events took second place for the week, with the limited edition DVD package of Advent Children following in third place, selling 25,000 units despite its exorbitant asking price of 29,500 yen ($265).

Oricon did not provide figures for the UMD release of Advent Children. An American release of the film is planned, though Square Enix hasn't set a date in stone for it yet.
