Electronic Arts and Digital Illusions have today announced the development of Battlefield: Modern Combat for the PlayStation 2. Currently scheduled for release toward the end of this year, the game will be the first in the Battlefield series to appear on a console and will allow up to 24 players to battle one another simultaneously online while also communicating with one another via USB headsets.

Battlefield: Modern Combat will allow players to fight for one of three military superpowers--the United States, China, or the newly formed Middle East Coalition. Players will have access to more than 70 different state-of-the-art weapons and advanced weapon systems in the game, including heat-seeking missiles, laser-designated bombs, and more. The 30-plus vehicles in the game will include tanks, helicopters, and other fast-attack craft.

Further information on Battlefield: Modern Combat is scarce at present, save for the fact that players who enjoy in-game success will be able to increase their ranks and can garner promotions in what EA describes as a persistent online world. We'll bring you more information on the game as soon as it becomes available.
