Richly detailed and well-executed puzzler. It behaves like LIMBO with a bigger sense of wonder.

User Rating: 7 | Never Alone XONE

Never Alone is a beautiful little puzzle game. It takes its cues from LIMBO, but moves in a different direction, offering just as much style and fun. It can be frustrating knowing what to do at times, and the controls are less forgiving than most platform-based games, but there is a lot of fun to be had with the game. Casually glancing at it makes it seem like a game for kids, but it contains enough dark elements and a high enough level of difficulty that most kids won't touch it.

The co-op gameplay is insanely fun, but you will miss the helpful boost of having the AI control your sidekick, leaving both players scratching their heads as to where to go/what to do in certain puzzles. There are segments of the game that break down due to control issues, such as having to shoot precisely either up or down. That particular mechanic is not much fun, especially when being chased by the villain while having to precisely aim. There are huge amounts of the game where the age-old platformer trick of adding drama by moving the screen to speed you up, and it can be frustrating when one cannot figure out where to jump, what to do, or how to get past a certain section.

As a storytelling tool, the game is flawless. Seriously, more cultures should translate their myths and stories into video games like this, as it is a great lens into another culture, told in their language, presented in their traditional visual style. There are culturally-relevant videos that can be collected along the way, and I enjoyed watching them all. On this level, the game succeeds at presenting so much context for the subject of the game, that I am wondering why other games don't follow this model. I'd love to see unlocks like this in Battlefield or Rainbow Six games, such as mini-docs about breaching tactics, weapon demos, etc.

One final thing to mention is that this game is beautifully rendered. For such a "white" and snowy world, it looks drop-dead gorgeous. The characters are wonderfully presented as well, and infused with personality.
