An Old-School Treat for Basketball Fans

User Rating: 9 | NBA Street Vol. 2 PS2
For old school gamers, you'll recognize a lot of NBA Jam in this series. It's truly reminiscent of those great roundball games from the early 90's.

Also, for old schoolers: the NBA Legends in this game are also a great touch. It's a lot of fun to play with the likes of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Dominique Wilkins, etc. et al.

And unlike some games that just give you a few "legend" names without much else - this game comes fully equipped with the details on the legends that true fans will absolutely love.

There's Larry Bird with his "Legend" jump shot and black converse sneakers and mullet haircut.

There's Michael Jordan in his 1985 rookie year Chicago Bulls uni - complete with gold chains and all. Just like you remember from the Gatorade Slam Dunk Contest.

Clyde Drexler's "Glide." And on and on.

The game is a real treat for basketball fans.

Also, it's incredibly easy to pick up and play. The in-game tutorials do a great job of teaching you everything you need to know to master the game.

The fun is multiplied greatly if you have a few friends over, too.

Which is the great thing about 3-on-3, arcade-style basketball (like NBA Jam). It's really great multi-player fun. There's more room on the court to move around, the speed of the game is a lot faster, and the fun level goes way up.

The graphics are outstanding, too.

I'm not really sure what the Offical GameSpot reviewer was looking at when he said the game wasn't graphically impressive. This game looks great. The character models don't just look realistic; they have an added stylistic flair and appearance that goes great with the overall feel of the title.

Along with that visual style, the game adds in a great mix of music and dialogue to create a lot of atmosphere to play in.

The on-court chatter of the game's announcer combined with the hip-hop sounds are awesome. There's a huge amount of variety in them, too. It's not listening to the same old sound bytes over and over. But, even after you've invested a lot of time into the game and have heard everything BJ Bobbito Garcia has to say - it still never gets old.

This game features a great mixture of style (there's a lot of flash to this game) and substance. Certainly not many sports games feature a better combo of the two than this game has.

Mainly, for that reason - the old-school elements and the stylish feel of this game - that make Vol. 2 my favorite in the NBA Street series.

This is a great game, with a lot of fun and features in it. Plus, it's got that extra style and flavor to just push it over the "good" level and into "great" territory.
