Mutant Mudds is a 2D platformer in the retro-style that many of us have longed to be taken back to. The game does everything right. It offers tightly tuned platforming mechanics, a unique and pleasing 3D effect that makes sense, as well as a challenge that is just enough to make you feel a grand sense of accomplishment. In the same vein as platformers of old, Mutant Mudds offers little story and in the same vein as the platformers of old, this doesn't matter. The game has a charming protagonist as well as fun enemy and level designs. At times, the levels feel brutal and unforgiving, but this challenge is what makes the game such a joy. The game consists of 16 normal levels and another 4 more difficult levels after those are complete. In addition to these 20 levels, there are 20 additional secret levels hidden within. I spent just under 10 hours completing each level and finding all of the secrets. The game has a real way of holding on to the player for just one more level or just one more try. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who is up for a challenge. It is easily among the top of the current original eShop releases.
