A fun game that could have been even more fun with a bit more depth.

I love 2d games. I do. I've always preferred them to 3d games, so when I read about Muramasa, I got excited. I bought a copy and spent many hours playing it, and I have reached the same conclusion that most critics have: it's good, but it could have been better.

You basically do the same thing throughout the whole game. Enter area, beat up bad guys, lather, rinse, and repeat. The combat itself is fun, but there's not much to it. There's only one attack button and one special attack. If there had been a combo system and some cooler platforming elements, the game overall would have been much stronger. That said, I never really got bored, and in fact, I'm on my way to collecting all the swords.

The graphics are really pretty too. I love all the subtle animations and cool smoke effects. The animations could have been a bit better, but hey, that's nitpicking.

This isn't a game for everyone, but if you like 2d you should give it a shot. If they ever make a sequel with more depth, it's a guaranteed AAA game.
