User Rating: 9.5 | MotoGP: Ultimate Racing Technology 2 XBOX
Not only is this the best motorcycle racing game on the system, it's the best racing game on the system, period. gameplay, graphics, and sound all combine to create an impressive package that anyone willing to invest the time will enjoy. The first MGP boasted gameplay that trumped all previous efforts. For this year, Climax has decided to refine its simulation engine. The result is a game that is difficult - and somewhat daunting for those not accustomed to the rules of bike racing - yet accessible. Indeed, staying on the road is the only option, as new players will undoubtedly learn after facing time penalties and eating dirt. The career mode allows the player to customize their bike, with the ability to earn points that can be distributed among a number of attributes, enabling the player to compete at higher levels. While the learning curve is pretty steep (and the game does very little hand-holding), a score of nine would imply gameplay faults, which simply isn't the case. The game's graphics have also been improved since the previous iteration. Tracks, bikes, special effects (including impressive rain effects), and animation are all done very well. Tracks have also been updated, to good result. The framerate also seems to stay at a steady 60fps. To say more would be redundant - the pics and movies speak for themselves. The game's sound is done well - bikes each have distinct engine sounds, and the sound of more than a dozen engines roaring at the starting line really puts you in the game. The music is probably the game's weakest aspect, as the eclectic mix of tracks (rock, pop-dance) might not suit everyone's tastes. Fortunately, this can be customized in the offline game. The few complaints about MGP's online experience have been addressed in MGP2, since players who choose to play by their own rules (or just poorly) are relegated to ghost status. In all, the online game is superb, and features the complete range of Live functionality. The production values of this game really set it apart from a lot of recent online games. It doesn't take long to realize that the developers took the time to polish this game, as everything screams high quality. So, if you're willing to tackle a game that doesn't offer instant gratification, MotoGP 2 is worth checking out.
