Mortal Kombat finally regains its stride.

Ever since MK4, I took a break from the series. 3D just didn't seem to fit the series, much like it never fit Street Fighter. A friend of mine hyped this game, so I found it at a bargain and tried it out.

Good thing I picked it up.

The story is usual MK tripe: new fighting tournament opens, same old fighters return with thin motives, supreme ruler must be defeated. But it was never high-quality to begin with. However, Konquest mode is surprisingly addictive. Basically a Zelda-lite journey through a story that's equally odd, tying all the characters together.

The controls are excellent. Responsive, fast-paced, and easy to string moves make it a worthy upgrade from MK4. All the fighters are solid and evenly matched.

The graphics are pretty darn nice. Beautifully built characters and vibrant (or at least crisp) environments make it a throwback to MK2. Music is, well, it's never been important so it's not here, either.

All in all, the best MK since UMK3 back before the new millennium. It's been that long.

Last Words: Surprisingly fun and easy to pick up. If you can stomach the gore, give it a try.
