Word Heaven Review

Word Heaven is one of the better mobile word puzzles you can download.

Word Heaven, a new word puzzle game from LimeLife, is an asset to the genre on mobile. Those familiar with the board game Scrabble will feel right at home with its simple word-construction gameplay, and they'll appreciate the game's subtle, smooth presentation as well. Word Heaven doesn't offer up anything particularly novel, but it's still good for more than a few lexical laughs.

Upward, ever upward, until you can spell no more!
Upward, ever upward, until you can spell no more!

The Supreme Court has proscribed Christian dogma from entering public schools--but there's nothing in the Constitution that says it can't appear in a mobile game like Word Heaven, where you have to guide your whimsical, clip-art angel ever upward by forming words out of six letters. As a timer ticks downward, you must earn points by milking that combination of letters for every two, three, four, five, and six-letter word you can find, thereby exercising your Scrabble skills to the max. After you come up with several words, you'll be able to replace up to three of your stock with new letters, opening up some new verbal possibilities. Also, every time you reach a new "heaven," which is cast in a different neon hue, you get an entirely fresh batch of letters to work with, and if you can come up with a six-letter word right off the bat, you'll get a special bonus. Other bonuses include a time refill, a free word, and a little minigame where you move your angel around and catch falling stars for extra points.

These bonuses appear as various prizes and objects that materialize out of clouds in the background, like the sun, the moon, or a pair of sneakers. Word Heaven's clean look matches its simple gameplay. The graphics are unobtrusive on the LG VX7000, which is a good thing, since graphics aren't really the point here. Still, they're attractive in a sort of pseudo-Flash, Web game manner. The sound is quite good and hits the right spots during play. Successful words are announced with a soft chime, and a strange theme song plays at the title screen.

In all, Word Heaven is one of the better mobile word puzzles you can download. It'll help you polish up your Scrabble and Jumble skills, and you can kill a surprising amount of time hunting for those last few combinations in that group of letters. Word Heaven's three difficulty levels, which regulate the number of hints you get and whether you can reuse words, add to its value, too. This game's a good choice all the way around.
