Blue Babel Review

If you've got a verbal bent, Blue Babel will definitely suit your fancy.

Blue Babel, a hybrid between Boggle and Scrabble, is a fairly slick--and addictive--mobile word game. Although it suffers a bit from an unfair reliance on chance in gameplay, it's still fun enough to captivate those who like wordplay.

In Blue Babel, you are given a random group of eight letters. From these letters, you must make several groups of words. The first group consists of three three-letter words; the second is composed of three four-letter words; and the fourth consists of three five-letter words. As in Scrabble, the point value of using a letter is inversely proportional to its frequency of use. Also familiar are the "x2" bonus multipliers that are akin to Scrabble's "double letter score" tiles. It is possible (likely, even) that you will cycle through many sets of letters in this way, since the game ends only when you are unable to put a word on the board.

My only critique of Blue Babel is the element of luck involved. Your score depends heavily on whether or not you get a good set of letters. Sure, that's true of Scrabble as well; but perhaps there should be an effort to keep the ratio of consonants to vowels constant.

If you've got a verbal bent, Blue Babel will definitely suit your fancy. Here's hoping that a multiplayer version is forthcoming.
