Beautiful atmosphere and environments but faulty in other areas.

This game was interesting. I first picked it up because I saw the reviews about the stellar graphics. Having a pretty good gaming PC, I thought I'd check it out to see what it was about. Admittedly, I was drawn in but then my time with this one became hit-and-miss where I found myself going back/forth on whether or not I even wanted to finish it or not.

Indeed, the environments are very well done and certainly draw you in to the situation quite effectively. You sense the dismal reality that life just isn't the same as it used to be not only due to humanity's own poor decisions but also due to the fact that mutant encounters are now a part of your daily routine.

The story progresses slowly and it becomes evident not too far in that the AI is poorly designed. In some cases they are brain-dead thugs. In other cases they are perfect operatives who can hit you without error though you don't even know where they are. This element of the game is what got frustrating. You just didn't know when and how you should tackle a particular tactical situation as you never knew if you were going to encounter the incredibly stupid or the incredibly perfect. This broken and unpredictable AI made the game feel unpolished and drastically reduced the fun-factor. Of course, here I'm referring to the human enemies and not the swarms of very fast moving mutants that also might become your demise. These also could be frustrating especially if they came in massive numbers. Ultimately, it simply feels like the developers spent all their time on the environments and forgot that AI is also an extremely important part of what makes a game fun and successful. Sure, the weapons were often a blast but you didn't always get to use them like you would hope.

I decided to proceed through to the end of the game but only because I really enjoyed the attention to the environments and the unfolding story. For me, I'm all about the story and this one drew me in enough that I wanted to continue. Unfortunately, this aspect of the game too sort of dropped off at the end even though things FINALLY began to make more sense. The ending felt tacked on and it was disappointing that the moral choices you could make throughout the game to get different endings were not even readily apparent at any point. Again, an aspect of a game that felt rushed or with too much focus on other areas.

I don't really think I would recommend this one per se. It's OK but nothing special. If you want to test your PC graphics, definitely take it for a spin. However, if you get disappointed like I did don't fault yourself for putting it away and not finishing it. You won't be missing much.
