Unlike other shooters.

MGO is not the best online shooter game but it has a few tricks up its sleeve. Levels represent your skill, unlike most online games these days, in MGO you can lose a level by gaining negative experience even though you have won a match. You not only have to win but be better than other players to advance in ranks so its challenging to keep your level, let alone be at the top. You might have noticed that many characters in the Metal Gear series have animal codenames, these are awarded by your statistics and not your levels. If you score a lot of headshots you will get a title like Eagle, there are even titles awarded for being offline for some time, but these titles also have to be maintained.

Other than this interesting system, MGO has its great moments and some very dull moments, like a poor map choice or excellent lobby searching. Some modes are very fun to play, like the one where a player gets to play as snake and take the stealthy approach and steal dog tags from players who are fighting each other. The mode where everyone is equipped with stealth camouflage is by far my most favorite, since it gets tense when the playing field gets smaller and everyone has to move away and give out their location. This is the prime example how a tactical stealth game should be translated into online. Sadly headshots are fairly easy to score so the combat can seem unbalanced at times, and with the slightly weird and complicated controls this is not a game for every action and/or stealth fan. Definitely try it out if you got it it with MGS4.
