A great game for some intense, not overly complicated action. If you want freedom of movement, this game is for you.

User Rating: 9.5 | Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction PS2
This was a great game. A shooter, you play as a private mercenary in the Korean peninsula. War has broken out between North Korea, South Korea, China and the Allies ( the US). Although you are not technically on any body's side as a private mercenary, the North Koreans are always the enemy and the Allies are pretty much always your friend. There is also the Russian Mafia to consider.
The game's most compelling feature is the large amount of freedom you have. You can steal any vehicle you can get your hands on with minimal consequence, you can go any where on the map as long as you bring a big enough gun to defend yourself.

It's fun as hell blowing up stuff, knocking down buildings. Yes, you can actually demolish buildings if you acquire enough fire power. You even get paid for every North Korean vehicle you destroy.

The game has an awesome camouflage system, where if you get in another factions vehicle (even North Korea's), they will see you as one of their own as long as you don't get out or get spotted by an officer. I can't tell you the number of times I infiltrated deep into enemy territory and then called in a devastating air strike. There are many air strikes to choose from, and more get unlocked as you progress through the game.

The game used a particular quote when the main character is low on ammo that made me laugh out loud when I first heard it:
"What do you want me to use, harsh language?"
The game might be worth getting for that quote alone. The quote was used before, in the movie "Aliens" from 1986. It never gets old though.

The Bottom line
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The good: Maximum freedom of movement, every thing else.

The bad: The music was boring and repetitive, but it's not central to the experience of this game.

The verdict: Get this game, it has to be in your great PS2 games collection.
