Once you get past its tough controls and repetitive nature, there's a lot to like.

Katamari Damacy was one of those most unique games out there when it was released in 2004. It instantly became a cult classic and spawned a sequel a year later. Namco also decided it would be a good idea to make Katamari portable, so that is what they did. But did they make it on the wrong system?

The first thing I should tell you about Katamari is that the controls are a bit overwhelming. In fact, they are a pain at first. A couple levels in is when you will start to get the hang of them, but I beat the game and I didn't know a few of the moves. So obviously they are not necessary, but they are a bit on the complicated side. Quite disappointing it is because a lot of Katamari's charm came from its controls. It had very unique controls with the analog sticks but not so much with the D-Pad and buttons. Still, the controls aren't all the charm in this game so there is still a lot left to enjoy.

The point of Katamari is simply rolling things up. You can't roll up anything larger than your Katamari (which I believe is Japanese for "clump"). The Katamari is the ball that you push. As you pick up objects your Katamari gets bigger, thus allowing you to pick up larger objects. You start the game off in a small room, but each level you complete, the world gets bigger.

Me & My Katamari is on a smaller scale than the other games. The levels are smaller, there aren't as many of them. It makes up for that by recycling the levels and only changing them by changing the themes. This is sort of cool at first but it tends to get repetitive because by the time you've beaten the game, you've done most of the levels 10 times each. But it's a treat each time you unlock a brand new level because than it's a blast to play.

The storyline is also smaller. In Katamari Damacy, the King of All Cosmos was totally wasted and destroyed all the planets. He then sends the Prince, (the little green guy) to clean up his miss buy making the planets. To make the planets, the Prince must collect items to put on his Katamari to make it big enough to replace the destroyed planet. The storyline in Me & My Katamari is essentially the same, except the King has destroyed islands and you need to make islands instead.

Katamari's music is recycled but that is by no means a bad thing. Katamari had one of the most fun soundtracks ever. The songs are very catchy and you won't know what they are saying but that is half the fun. There are still a lot of songs in this game and a sound test room where you can listen to all of your favorites. The sound effects are all goofy and not really memorable. I don't know, I don't like reviewing sound effects because it's just a pointless thing to review, so as of now I am officially done reviewing sound effects unless they totally stand out.

The graphics are almost on par with the PS2 game, which is a good thing. Katamari's graphics are pretty blocky but they are meant to be that way. They are very colorful and have a lot of charm and detail you wouldn't believe. Katamari may not be the kind of game that defines a system in this category, but it's charm makes up for it in the end.

Me & My Katamari's core game is pretty short. It is longer than the original game but not longer than We Love Katamari. Once you've beaten the core game, which is maybe 4-5 hours long, you unlock two 2D Katamari stages. It's a pretty cool extra. There is also a Wi-Fi mode, granted if anyone is actually on the server and some bonus levels you can do. There are also a ton of presents you unlock in the core game that the Prince can wear. So even though Katamari's core game may not be long, it has a lot of extras making it worth the money.

Me & My Katamari is a pretty fun game, though not on par with the other two Katamari games before it. I think for the best results, Namco should have stuck with making a DS Katamari which would've had more user-friendly controls than this beast. Still, beneath the repetition, short length, and tricky controls, there is a gem of a PSP game that I recommend to anyone with a soul.
