An easier difficulty than Ghosts To Glory and lots of new additions make the second Maximo much better than the first.

Maximo vs. Army of Zin is much better than its predecessor, Maximo Ghosts to Glory. As the first Maximo was an awesome game you’d think Capcom would have had to mess something up, right? Well surprisingly they didn’t. Every new addition they have added improves the game and doesn’t detract from it. The story starts off with Maximo sitting around a fire as he’s ambushed by bandits. Once they see who he is they joke about the rumors that he’s the man who “walks with death”. Shortly after a woman comes running through the forest telling Maximo that her village is under attack. And so our hero starts his quest……

The gameplay in Maximo: AoZ remains very much like the first. Although this time around, there seems to be more of an emphasis on combat than platforming. The save and death system has been changed. You can save at anytime on the world map (after each level) for no cost. The death system has changed in that Death Coins, which used to be your continues, are now your lives. If you lose all your lives, you simply start where you last saved. And you gain a Death Coin for every hundred or so souls you collect. This testifies to how much easier the game is than the first. If you beat Ghosts, than you should have no trouble beating this one. If you’re an average player and this is the first Maximo you’ve played, than it will definitely be a challenge. Another little game play tweak is the addition of merchants. Instead of the little vending machines from Ghosts, you now buy all your power-ups, health, upgrades, moves, and extra armor from merchants who appear from time to time. There’s also some new weapons (two swords and two hammers), multiple sets of boxers, shields, and hint scrolls to buy. Another gameplay addition is the inclusion of innocents which you can save for rewards or information. This adds a little bit of tension to the normally laid back gameplay. And one last addition is the ability to play as Grim for short bursts of time. You now have a Grim Meter which fills with the souls you obtain. When you play as Grim you're invincible and can do much more damage than if you were just Maximo.

The graphics are a definite upgrade from Ghosts and look good on the PS2. One thing that I was happy with was the lip syncing, which is much better in AoZ. The environments look nice and many objects are breakable or interactive. Another thing which has improved is the character models which, once again, look much better in AoZ.

Sound is almost exactly the same in AoZ. You still have fight-type and epic sounding music comprising the soundtrack. The voices sound nice and are used quite frequently. And sound effects are used a lot, also.

The value of the game is once again pretty good, although AoZ seems much shorter than the first. And the gameplay additions make it much more replayable as well.

Overall, Maximo vs. Army of Zin is an amazing sequel which is much better than the first. The story follows the first and it will be an even more enjoyable if you have beaten Ghosts. Buy this game! It’s very cheap now and extremely underrated. You won’t regret it.
