A good premise that is ruined by poor execution.

User Rating: 5 | Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects PS2
Marvel Nemesis is a collaboration between Marvel and EA, two heavyweights in their respected fields. With Marvels classic characters and EAs production might and talent this could have the top comic book game of the year and perhaps of all time. Unforunately Marvel Nemesis falls flat on its ass due a bunch of mistakes that ruin the game. The game of course has a versus mode but it also has a story mode that chronicles the games alien invasion story line from the viewpoint of several characters. The player can choose whether they may want to play The Things level but after that they can play Wolverines. The idea of being able to switch up characters with different levels and stories is interesting but it falls flat when you actually have to play the levels. The levels in the story are the same that are found in the versus mode but just a few extra touches. There are also too few enemies in the levels and the fact that they are completely mindless and present no challenges doesn't help the game. The diffuclty in a way does go up in a way due to flying enemies that are very hard to hit and boss battles at the end of each stage. But perhaps the greatest crime the game makes is having no lock-on button, so when you are fighting multiple foes you need to line yourself up with each one to successfully attack them. The story mode does present some cool cutscenes that in a way reward you for putting up for how bad the gameplay is. But the one perhaps greatest flaw is that you need to play the mode in order to unlock new characters such as Daredevil and the new characters like Fault Zone. The versus mode does present some challenge but after you play all the characters there is pretty much nothing else to do since the characters in a way play the same and their moves list is small. The controls as a whole are simple and easy to learn but it would have helped if there were a few more attack buttons. The graphics are decent but compared to other titles that are out now they seem a bit dated. The character models have nice details but the enviroment seem very flat in terms of textures and the game also suffers from several lighting and texture glitches. Marvel Nemesis could have been a really good game due to the license but due to a bunch of bad mistakes it is not marvelous at all.
