Sort of fun...until it gets frustrating

User Rating: 7.3 | Mario vs. Donkey Kong GBA
This is a game that starts off fun and then just deteriorates into frustration. I think the problem lies in the fact the game does not know which genre it wants to be more: Platformer or Puzzle. It does each of those roles admirably...but together it comes to a point of tremendous frustration. Early on the puzzling is the focus...there are platforming aspects but they are secondary to figuring out the best route through the map to maximize points and time. Later the platforming becomes overly difficult. It was not uncommon for me to completely give up for days at a time because of the extraordinary difficulty of some levels. By the middle of the fourth world, the level of precision required was so exacting as to take all the fun away. I want a game to be hard but when I feel frustrated the fun goes away. Maybe others are simply better at games than I am, but for me, this started out as a blast and turned into real bitterness.
