Once upon a time there was released a revolutionary game. It was Russian in origin and had a fairly simple premise, arrange oddly shaped blocks into rows, destroy a row and you get points. it started on the PC but became the killer game for the original gameboy. That game was Tetris. Lumines is in essence the spiritual successor of Tetris. But make no mistake this isn't your old Dos and GB classic. This game enhances the concept and brings style and sophistication for a new generation of gamers. The object is simple, 2x2 blocks fall along a rectangular board. The rectangular board is not wider instead of taller, which is of the style in the 21st century. The blocks can consist of two colors and your objective is to make the blocks disappear by group together like color pieces in a 2x2 square. Sounds simple enough, but there is a catch, the timeline. The timeline is your best friend and your worst enemy. When you group the pieces together they will not disappear until the time line passes by. The game rotates skins as you progress through the game. Skins are essentially the look, feel, and sound of the board. Each skin features different backgrounds, animations, colors, and music. The timeline keeps in beat with the tune playing therefore it will speed up and slow down depending on the skin. This can make each level feel very unique and give each its own twist. Sometimes the changes will catch you off gaurd but I think that is by design. Also some skins can be flasher and more distracting then others, again I believe out of design as it really adds to the challenge of the game. Not that you really need any additional challenge as this game is extremely difficult. This game is super addictive and great fun. At launch I have five different PSP games setting on my desk. I've played some of each one but Lumines is the one I keep going back to. This game is perhaps the first killer game for the PSP, despite the fact it is a puzzle games. It is one of the most entertaining titles out there and will please any gamer that likes puzzle games and a few gamers who don't.
