Poor execution

User Rating: 5 | Lords of the Fallen (2014) PC

For anyone ponder this game I would strongly recommend passing on it if the following are viewed as problematic

  • The combat is slow but your general movement is normal. So you run in to this strong contrast between the rate at which you are attack to the rate at which you move. The delay painfully dramatic.
  • Stamina bar affects all of your combat movement. Your stamina bar is particularly small leaving you to attack a couple of times. If you dodge you are down to one attack and if you perform a strong attack you are out of dodge. You can increase your stamina pool but that takes some grinding. Performing correctly sequence attacks reduces stamina cost.
  • I have fought three bosses so far. They are as slow as you are but they tend to perform area attacks. So you try to avoid them by keeping your distance however when they are open you have to sprint towards them consuming stamina and leaving you to perform either one or no attacks. The downtime for bosses are significantly smaller than your downtime. These boss fights are nothing but a tedious grind.
  • Animation locking. You simply cannot perform another move until the animation has been fully executed. Leaving you open quite often and further enhancing the sluggish nature of the game.
  • Grinding is absolutely necessary. Because you are handicapped by your slow movement and weak attacks grinding is the only way to have a real fighting chance.
  • Close quarters and narrow paths leads to camera breakage and worsen the overall combat.

As for the positives, the graphics are good, the sound is good. The voice acting is serviceable but the dialogue makes it less desirable. As for story, well it was not presented in a manner to which I would care.

In the end this game tries to be difficult by illogically handicapping the player. I don't understand the logic of this type of gameplay. Is it that far fetch to enable the player while making the enemies equally capable and smart? The bulk of the game's difficulty is in the painfully sluggish combat and laggy controls. The game might as well be turn base because it takes seconds for the basic action to be performed.
