When people bring up the argument of what was the best platformer of last generation you hardly ever hear anything about Klonoa 2: Luntea's Veil. Which is a shame. Out of all the great platformers on the PS2, Klonoa 2: Luntea's Veil could be the best of them all. The PS2 does have some great platformers indeed. The Jak series with its stunning visuals, colorful worlds, GTA style gameplay. The Ratchet and Clank series with it's futuristic look and huge selection of wonderful weapons and gadgets. Then there is the stealthy Sly Cooper and the always satisfying Rayman series. Klonoa is right up to par with all of them. The game plays like a traditional 2D style platformer. You play as the cute little skunk-rat creature sporting a Pac-Man hat and baggy jeans. Klonoa isn't as good as a jumper as a lot of platforming characters, but he can float for a second or two which helps make for it in a way. Yes, our furry friend needs a little help making some of the jumps in his world, and he does that by inflating his enemies. Klonoa has one attack and that is a little beam that shoots a few feet out of a ring that Klonoa wields in his right hand. You'll use your inflated fiends quite often to help you in the most simple and complicated of situations. They enable you to double jump, you can throw them into upcoming booby traps, and even use them to solve puzzles. Puzzles are what make the game really challenging and you'll do quite a few of them. You'll do them at theme parks, up side down on the ceiling, you'll be timed at times, and sometimes the puzzles will get on your last nerve. Not all of the levels are played like a 2D platformer actually. On some stages you'll have to hop on Klonoa's awesome snow or surf board and take on some groovy waves and slopes. The 3D boarding are just as fun to play and control that it feels like a game within a game. The boss battles are a lot of fun as well. Klonoa 2 has a fantastic cel-shaded visual style and runs very smoothly. The game also has some nice lighting effects and lots of pretty colors that will quinch your sweet eye for sure. Klonoa sounds great as well. The creatures have some unique sounds, but some of the voice overs can be rather annoying. The music is very well done. If you overlooked this game and you enjoy platformers then Klonoa 2 is definately worth your money if you can find it anywhere. It was one of the first games I bought for my PS2 back in 2002 I think and it was already hard to find back then. I found it brand new for $12.99, so I'm assuming you can find the game dirt cheap. Unless it's become one of those rare games like Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 that just suddenly shot up in price. Take my word on this one. It's one of the best platformers from last generation.
