Killzone is a no doubt a letdown and not a good example to those new to the genre, but to those familiar it just might.

Killzone was released in 2004 exclusively for the Playstation 2. The game was thought to bring a next-level FPS experience to those willing to spend some allowance money and the next thing you know, it turns out not what enveryone thought it would be. The game comes to this result for a number of reasons. First lets get to the gameplay. It's not bad, but it's not well polished either. The game includes the usual aspects and meets todays standards for an FPS. The has pistols, assault rifles, shotguns, snipers, grenade launchers, grenades themselves, and the favourite, the bazooka. The game has missions set up for you and has a selection of four playable characters. The missions usually have you traversing certain areas to get across the land and if not then you're probably on a scavenger hunt to retrieve something. The missions of the game can get really repetitive because they have pretty much the same set of objectives for you to complete. Each mission it's mostly gonna be 'traverse the swamp' or 'traverse the mountains' and so on. During all this traversing you will always do the same; fighting off an army of annoying Helghast soldiers that keeps coming back for more and just to let you know the game's difficulty level needs a little tuning so the Helghast are always gonna be hard no matter what. Although all this gets repetitive and you'll eventually get bored at some point, the game makes up for it by supplying you with an arsenal of fun to use weapons so kill out the Helghast in many diffrent ways. You can blast them up with 3 diffrent assault rifles, blow them up with your grenade launchers, assassinate them long range style with your sniper rifle, or make them fly with 2 diffrent rocket launchers so as you can see there are many ways for you to hunt down the Helghast and take care of buisness. So the gameplay you can say is quite average if you're a fan of FPSs, but the visuals and the sound are somewhat frustrating and not appealing at all. Some objects in the game look similar to that of games released for the original Playstation and just appear to look like coated polygons. The scenery of the game is constantly changing which is a good thing because you're experiencing and exploring different areas every time you complete a mission, but the area that surrounds you isn't appealing either and doesn't seem interesting at all, so to sum it up the level design is dull and boring. The sound and graphical glitches are so messed up and frequent that it's strangely amusing in some way, although it's sometimes a serious thing. You end up not being able to move sometimes when you're in a corner so you're pretty much stuck and can't move the only way out is to chuck a grenade at the ground near you commit suicide, you'll start off at the last checkpoint but if you've experienced what I have, then you'll find the checkpoint pretty far from where you had to kill yourself. This ends up getting really frustrating and is sure to get you angry at the game and will make you wish that Guerrilla® had spent more time polishing the game's bugs. It all concludes to this: If you like FPS games and only if you are sure you're well experienced with them, I think it wouldn't hurt to check it out but maybe just a rental at your local video store because I don't think buying the game will be worth it. And if you're new to the FPS genre and want to give it a try, I don't recommend that this game is one to be on your wish list.
