An underappreciated FPS that has a great gritty and realistic feel about it. The good out wieghs the bad.

User Rating: 8.5 | Killzone PS2
Killzone is one of those games that really shouldnt be missed if your a fan of the FPS genre. It has a fanastic gritty realism that I've yet to experience in another FPS. Multiple characters, awesome Variety of armamament including shotgun equipped assault rifles, grenade launchers, and the awesomely powerful mobile artillery, Well designed enemies with different ranks, and well imagined terrain, including war ravaged city blocks, parks, research labs, snow covered military bases, etc.

Helghasts, your main foe in Killzone, come from a planet known as Helghan. The planets harsh environment strengthened them, leaving them with only one weakness, the need to use a tank of air from their homeworld. They launched an attack on the ISA forces of Vekta, but were ultimately defeated. In the time of the game, They have rebuilt there forces, and possess a burning hatred for those who defeated them. They launch another attack, landing troops on the surface of your homeworld and its up to you as one of 4 characters to become a hero and stop the Helghast invasion.

One of the things that stands out when you first start Killzone is the realistic effects and gritty feeling that war really should envoke. None of those pastel colored weapons and shiny green body armor. No, in Killzone you get dust covered wreckage, fires burning everywhere, gunfire can be heard in the background, aswell as the calls for backup from your enemies. It really gives a since of fighting in a war torn environment.

The animations are another notable feature. Climbing a ladder doesnt involve running up it with you gun still ready, and you go up it like some kind of ninja. No, you climb the ladder just as a weighted down, tired soldier would. All of the weapons feature highly detailed animations unique to them, which take time to complete. This gives an even greater since of realism without being annoying.

The story campaign has a decent length to it, but the battlegrounds mode for multiplayer with others or bots will keep you playing for a long time.

There are few minor issues, such as the very infrequent screen tear, ocassional twitchy corpse, and a bit of lag when the firefights get extremely intense, but all in all these are very uncommon.

All in all, if your tired of the Halo's and Timesplitters out there, pick up Killzone for a great time.
