A refreshing and unique direction for a game to be taken

I really like when someone not only makes a well controlled, fun to play game, but also takes it in a fresh and unique direction. After al, these days when some 3d games are harder than others to revisit due to faster aging standards, it's rather enjoyable to have a game like this that will be fun to revisit for a long time due to its originality moreso than its flashiness.

You are the prince of the universe and you must roll up objects on earth progressively larger and larger until your ball or "katamari", is of proper size to be turned into a star. That's about it for the premise, that and your rather unbalanced father who speaks in a rather nonsensical manner.

The graphics have a very basic look to them, but not out of sloth for design, but in a rather unique sort of way.

The gameplay and ball mechanics work something like the controlling of a tank, utilizing both joysticks, and it purports this method rather well.

The music, just like the rest of the game brings some rather memorable and unique melodies to the table, drawing on a mixture of J-pop, jazz and rock to create an eclectic mix of tunes that have already been formed into a popular soundtrack CD.

The game has excellent replay value due to people wanting to beat their records over and over again, another added bonus for a game already on the cheap with a 20-30 dollar price tag.

I'm glad to see this game also got a sequel, and hope that even though the maker has said he will make no more Katamari games, that he will someday dazzle us with another new innovative concept.
