Zoo Tycoon...with a few twists and turns.

User Rating: 7.5 | Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis PS2
The Jurassic Park series of video games have usually been action-oriented and such. Back in 2004 (when I was obsessed with dinosaurs) my mom found this at Best Buy for $9.99 and bought it as a Christmas gift. I played it from that Christmas until early 2006. I just put the disc in my PS2 again today, to give it a little try. And surprisingly, it was an enjoyable experience.

First off, the graphics are not all fine and dandy. Compared to other PS2 games, the environment is terrible and the repetitive character models really sicken me with thier ugly features. The dinosaurs are beautiful, though, and their textures are very nice and seem very realistic. Mixed reactions in this area.

GRAPHICS SCORE: 6.5/10

For the gameplay, JP: OG offers a selection of 25 species of dinosaurs to breed in a theme park you can let guests enter and enjoy. There are attractions you can build, kiosks to make, and digging to do. You have teams dig for fossils that your scientists turn into DNA. After you reach 50% DNA, you can breed that species of dinosaur. You start out with 2 dinosaurs and very little money. But with effort, that amount (for both) can grow.

Operation Genesis' biggest aspect is the simulation part, but also has a side quest with action-oriented missions. Their not all that special, but some of them can be a bit fun.

The simulation portion is definitely fun when you use the Red Tape code (so when guests die, yes they can die, your money doesn't deplete) and get plenty of guests, delete every enterance and exit, and unleash your carnivores on them to watch them get devoured. It's sickening fun!

GAMEPLAY SCORE: 8/10

The sound is limited, but good. The roars are very nice, and the music is repetitive but soothing.

SOUND SCORE: 7/10

Finally, for lasting appeal. JP: OG offers endless hours of gameplay if you can get past all the missions, play for a while and get through it. After a while though, it gets boring.

LASTING APPEAL SCORE: 7/10

Overall, the experience is a fun one that will last you quite a while. Dinosaur fans and simulation fans will definitely get a kick out of unleashing blood-thirsty dinosaurs out on guests to watch them get ripped apart. Although its not gory, it's still very satisfying watching their ugly faces get eaten by large dinosaurs. :)

My biggest complaint, though, is the loading times. Ugh, they're very annoying. Especially when you enter each mode from the menu screen.

I reccomend this game, overall, if you can find it used for $20 or less. It's well worth it.
