I have Ecco for the Dreamcast, and let me tell you; the favorite part of that game for me was fighting the great white shark boss. This game is a dream come true for me. And I am not going to let a few glitches screw it up for me. Yes the game comes with some bugs, but it doesn't make the game unplayable. I did have to restart my PS2 once since playing. But I am almost done the game (the story missions anyway). And my framerate has dropped significantly only once. In a move that is helpful but almost admitting guilt by the developers of the game, they have included a "Restore checkpoint" option in the pause menu, almost as if they knew the game had bugs. But hey, it works, so whatever.

This is a game about a giant killer shark. And to that end it is very fun. While the controls certainly take some getting used to things become much more fun and enjoyable once you learn your moveset. You can grab boats, and bite them a few times into shreds. Or jump outta the water and belly flop on them and smash them to bits. The people on them go flying into the water for more fun. The power moves are unlockable by upgrading your 5 stats: Health, Hungar, Speed, Accuracy, and Power. You earn points by completeing missions or side missions, finding hidden items like Meg teeth, body bag icons, mermaid icons, treasure chests, license plates, tin cans (that can unlock film clips), etc.

There are tail whips and power tail whips and charge head butts and corkscrew attacks. You can target lock any limb on there body, and then bite. Then you drag the screaming victim under water where their screams for help become garggled, and then you can eat them and turn them into meaty chunks and a cloud of red; tear then apart depending on which appendage you had target locked when you bit into them. There is a certain amount of fun tearing a leg off, and seeing the person wriggle and grab their now severed nub in pain then continue to swim for sure, make it to the beach and crawl onto the beach cuz they only have one leg, then beach yourself and grab them again and pull them back into the water to play some more. Targeting their head and ripping it off is of course an instand kill.

In another cool little thing in the game is if you tear a limb off a person in the water, the other smaller sharks around the chaos including hammerheads or makos and others will circle in groups and start nipping at the victim till they are gone. Being the head guy getting your fill then leaving the scraps for the little guys is also great fun. You can also grab someone in your mouth and spit them out for some fun target practice or watch them go splat into a big oogey mess of blood and chunks if they hit the ground. Or spit them and then jump outta the water and catch them in midair and have a BIG chomp and boom they are instantly chunks!

As far as the missions go, some of them can be a bit hard in trying to figure out what you are supposed to do, but once you figure it out, it's pretty easy to get it done. The story invovles Brody's son 30 years later wanting to kill you and a scientists wanting to experiment on you, and of course a mayor who just wants to put on the 4th of July celebration and pretend nothing is wrong. Escaping Sea World, the first level before the game becomes free-roam was defintely the most fun.

Bosses include, a killer Orca whale, a Giant Squid whose legs you can bite off and whose giant eyeballs can be bit out, big ships and others. Side missions include things like, catch the water ski jumper in the air after he jumps the ramp, or find the swimming dog and eat him in a crowd of simmers, or kill 5 lifeguards before they make it to shore. They are many actually and each one has 3 different difficulty levels.

As for the graphics, it's obvious the water graphics and underwater graphics are very well done. Above water graphics like the people or buildings, are not so great. But this IS a game about being underwater so it's obvious they focused on this aspect. You'll see sunken ships and planes, caverns, coral, schools of fish, tons of species including, seals, walrus, eels, octopuses, crabs, lobsters, seahorses, pirhanna, manta rays, dolphins (kill Ecco!), hammerheads, makos, tiger sharks, barracuda, tons of different kinds of fish, etc.

So go for a swim, go thru the story mode, go cause some havoc, or go to Seal Island for a big lunch. In the end, it's all a guilty plesure and it's all fun.
