While not as good as the other games in the series, Jak and Daxter : The Lost Frontier is still a great game to get.

User Rating: 7.5 | Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier PS2
Jak and Daxter : The Lost Frontier is the latest game in the incredible Jak and Daxter series. As the first game in the series not to be developed by developer Naughty dog, Lost Frontier is a game with a somewhat different style then the previous games, bringing new features and discarding some old ones. While this game does not quite reach the high standards of the Jak and Daxter series it is still a great game and a good addition to the series.

Story - Once again, the story focuses on Jak and his sidekick Daxter, the world is running out of eco, the substance which both regulates the balance of the world and is used by people as a source of power. The world is tearing itself apart, and so Jak decides to go on a quest to discover new sources of eco. joining him are of course Daxter and his old friend Keira, now training to become an eco sage. no sooner do they reach the brink, essentialy the end of the world, that Jak's team is attacked by pirates. The story itself isnt the best seen in the Jak Daxter and is in fact considerably weaker then the previous games, but is still interesting enough to be considerd good. The characters likewise are more forgettable then the characters of the older games, but still do the job of moving the plot along. The one big issue is that the game is simply too short, the older Jak games were very long and could last a very long time. The Lost Frontier, lasts no more then 7 hours, and thus while the game is good, it just feels like it should have lasted at least 2-3 times longer then it did.

Gameplay - The Gameplay in the Lost Frontier is similar to the previous jak games (Jak 2 and 3 in particular). it consists of standard platforming, mixed with some 3rd person shooting, and just like the previous games , this combination works really well. The guns available in this game are very similar, almost identical in fact, to the guns found in Jak 2 and 3, although there are less of them . This new game does innovate in several ways though, the first and foremost innovation is the new flying sections of the game. Throughout the game you will be able to collect a number of flying machines (ranging from a small space-ship like plane, to a slow bomber with high defense). These can be modified with upgrades one can either buy or steal from enemies during aerial dogfights. the aerial dogfights are actually done very well, and are very fun. Jak can also use eco he as collected to upgrade his health and stats. One new feature which isnt done so well, is the dark daxter stages. at certain points in the game, the player takes control of Daxter who has turned into a monster. This sounds good in concept but it doesnt really work well, as these sections are more confusing and rather boring, thankfully these arent too frequent. Overall The gameplay is good, though the inclusion of the dark daxter stages is a downside and is hopefully not included in any Jak games in the future.

Graphics and Sound - The graphics for The Lost Frontier are a very good. The development team used the original graphics engine of the original games, and upgraded it to squeeze a few more polygons out of the now nearly decade old PS2. The character models in this game are extremely good. Everything looks more realistic and more detailed while still having a cartoony and colourful look to it. One can see individual strands of hair (at least to a certain extent) on Daxter's fur, compared to the older games where his fur was not really distinguishable in comparisn. The only problem is that some enviroments are somewhat emply, while on a technical level, the graphics are great, from an artistic standpoint this game could use more detailed enviroments. Regarding music and sound, the music is actually quite similar to what was found in the previous games, though there isnt enough of it. certain places in the game have no sound at all, adding to that impression of emptiness the graphics give. The voice acting is well done and is on par with the previous games, which is to say, done quite well. Overall this game does look and sound great, but feels somewhat unfinished due to a lack in detail and music.

In conclusion, Jak and Daxter : The Lost Frontier, is a good game, no doubt about it, it has platforming and gameplay similar to the older Jak games, and the inclusion of the aerial dogfights are welcomed. The graphics are incredible for the PS2, and the music and voice acting are good. The main issue with this game is that it simply feels too short, almost pitifuly short, especially for a Jak and Daxter game. this gives the game a feeling of emptiness and that there was a lack of effort to match the older Jak and Daxter games. this feeling is extended onto the enviroments which can sometimes feel empty and the lack of music in some places does hurt the game's atmosphere.
nevertheless, The game is worth getting for platforming fans and of course people who liked the previous Jak and Daxter games.
