More Interactive Comic than Game

User Rating: 6 | Infinite Stratos 2: Ignition Hearts VITA

IS: Ignition Hearts is 100% adventure game. I bought it in anticipation of some humorous moments and some IS action sequences that I could enjoy in spite of my poor Japanese. Alas, there is none of the latter.

The game plays more like an interactive comic than an actual game. There is minimal animation - only the characters' faces are animated, and they have just a handful of stock poses for each character. For action sequences, the screen goes black and a few flashes play along with some sound effects.

The art is high quality, albeit static, and matches the anime series.

The game is text-heavy, like you'd expect from an interactive comic. Fortunately, in addition to the text, all but Ichika's character are fully voiced, so you can pick up a fair amount of what's said even if you don't know all the Kanji (like me). There is also a feature that allows you to review and re-play conversations.

Perhaps it's my shaky Japanese, but it's a little unclear what triggers Ignition Points, and Ichika's choices that can influence IP are few and far between. In some cases, a choice affects a girl across campus that isn't even part of the scene you're playing.

In short, if you're looking for an immersive I.S. Academy experience, you'll be disappointed. It works well as an interactive "Choose Your Own Adventure"-style comic, though.
