The poor man's Baldur's Gate

User Rating: 8 | Icewind Dale (DVD) PC
Following on from the excellent Baldur's Gate series, Icewind Dale is a fun adventure which focuses more on adventuring than the deeply - immersive character interaction which was the hallmark of both the Baldur's Gate series, as well as the wonderful Planescape Torment.

One of the first things i noticed upon starting Icewind Dale, however, was some of the god-awful voice acting which was on offer.

I could picture the skinny, bespectacled American 'actor' already, before i had begun my adventures - you know the one who thinks he's the funniest man on earth, but all his efforts will do is make you wish you could shake the image from your head so you could seek what you hoped to find upon buying this game - some immersion into a believable fantasy world.

It is in stark contrast to the initial impressions from the other titles i have mentioned.
But it is also significant, since the tacky voice overs are a true indication for what Icewind Dale is - a no-frills dungeon crawl in a solid and enjoyable world.

For me, Icewind Dale is a game i can play when i'm in between games and just want a bit of adventure - nothing more.

If you're a die hard dungeon crawler looking to slay evil monsters and follow a set path through a decent story, then this game could be for you.

But it won't offer you the immersion and richness of characters and storyline that Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 does, not by a long shot.
