An ok game but certainly not the best shooter on the market.

Military subjugation is nothing short of ugly and can be downright scary in its own right but thankfully we've been given a chance to experience it from the safety of our homes in the form of Homefront. The story Homefront finds the US under the control of the Korean army and the opening does a great job of bringing you up to speed of how this came to be. The opening in some ways is close to what has actually happened in the world with regards to the death of North Korea's leader Kim Jung ill and his son Kim Jung Un succeeding him. The opening also paints a pretty grim picture with North Korea finally attacking and gaining control of South Korea which results in a united Korea coupled with the rising gas prices and the unified Korea finally attacking and taking control of the United States. You play as a pilot the resistance movement springs free and from there you take part in guerrilla style operations. The game does a lot to get you invested with use of newspaper clippings right through to the atmosphere which really helps add a sense of immersion to the game as whole.

On the graphics front Homefront doesn't impress at all. For the most part the graphics feel ok with nothing really special. In some ways it kind of looks likes a dumbed down version of the call of duty engine. In fact one might argue that the graphical quality may feel like something worthy of a downloadable game from either Xbox live or the Playstation Network but not from a disc based game by any measure.

Gameplay wise Homefront plays much like any other shooter on the market with nothing really out of the ordinary. However the game does play lip service at least to scarcity of ammo for certain guns which means that it makes switching weapons from those of your fallen foes all that more essential. You can use fancy gadget or 2 but these are usually at only certain points in the game and aren't readily available.

On the multiplayer side of things Homefront does use an online pass which sucks for those that chose to buy it used. The actual multiplayer side of things is unique from other shooters out there in that while you're killing foes and such your earning points which only apply to the match you're currently in. The idea is that you earn points and then spend them in verity of ways whether it be to use a rocket launcher or deploy small robot that you can control. On the surface these may seem like a variation of kill streak perks like what are seen in most common shooters but that description would be a lie. The idea behind this system is to give you a chance and decide which one you want to deploy and when provided you have the points on hand to spend. This adds a unique dynamic the multiplayer side of things.

Overall Homefront is your very run of the mill shooter that feels like it belonged as a downloadable only game rather than a tradition disc release game. If your craving a shooter for your collection or just want to try something different then Homefront is for you otherwise you would be better off just renting it.
