If you want a cookie-cutter first-person shooter to play? Homefront is for you. Otherwise forget it. While Homefront has an engaging and interesting story it seems to lack in every other aspect.

First off, the weapons in this game are quite bland. It seemed to me that every single weapon has near identical accuracy, close to the same firepower, and to top it all off, no bullet penetration. It seems that all the weapons are the same because when switching from a Small Machine Gun to a Large Machine Gun the accuracy is near the same, I am quite sure you cannot pick off enemies with either from 60+ feet very easily, but in Homefront you sure can. To add to the list of mediocre weapons, take a look at the shotguns, they have very, very short range, making them practically useless in the swarms of enemies that engage you, if you get in close enough you are most likely dead. The only redeeming gun was the sniper rifle, with high accuracy and long range they got it right! While the weapons are boring they can be accepted and played along with for the duration of the short campaign (less than 4 hours for me).

Another lacking feature of Homefront is its below average AI. Your team-mates will help you little to none throughout the single-player campaign. Often only hitting 1 in 20 enemies, while acceptable for adding difficulty this blatant disregard becomes an annoyance. To top it off I found that it was possible to shoot directly through team-mates, there is no friendly fire, this makes a useful, portable, human-shield. To top it off I often found the enemy AI lacking as well, often they would run into path-finding obstacles and not correct themselves. This was added to by poor animations that often snapped back and forth. Enemies would be in cover and then nearly instantly be standing and then in cover once more, with little-to-no animation in between.

Through all these let-downs the game is still playable, but at that it is a generic FPS that players can ignore and not miss out on much. It goes to show that uninspiring gameplay can take a game from greatness to mediocrity. This is one game that I suggest be left on the store shelf.
