A nice break from the Hitman formula

User Rating: 7 | Hitman: Absolution PC

Absolution is the 5th instalment to the Hitman franchise and is in my opinion very different from the other games. This game is more story driven than the others which makes it a different experience, but that's not a bad thing. The story is about 9-14 hours long depending on your play style, if you are stealthy it about 14 hours and if you not stealthy its 9 hours.

The story is kind of interesting at first, unfortunately it later devolves in to them using a bunch of different excuses and obstacles to extend the play time. The cliff notes version is you play as Agent 47 who fees compelled to take care of a girl called Victoria who was in Diana Burnwood's care before Agent 47 was tasked with ending her life by the ICA. This was triggered after she kidnapped the girl to save her from the experiments that the agency were putting her through. After finding out this information from Diana in her final moments Agent 47 sets out for revenge on the ICA.

The game takes place in various US states such as Chicago and South Dakota. While there isn't as much variety in locations like in prior entries I didn't really mind too much personally. It's clear that each level in the game had some extreme care behind it since each one is extremely well developed and presented.

The gameplay is slightly different from prior entries in the series as well, instead of big sandbox levels they're split into small contained chunks. I understand why this is the case but the since each section is essentially it's own mini-levels you don't experience any consequences from how you tackled the previous section. The levels don't have as much replay value as Blood Money which is sad. If this game was a new IP people would not mind that much. The core gameplay remains the same however which is just kill targets in creative ways but in this case it's for moral reasons instead of monetary.

Taking all this into account along with my knowledge of how it compares to past entries I would rate this game a 7/10. It falls somewhere in the middle in terms of quality on the series rating list. I would recommend it to both fans of the series and newcomers. This is by far the most accessible entry.
