A normal and enjoyable evolution of the GH series, too bad Aspyr hates PC players so much - The return of the laggy port

User Rating: 7.5 | Guitar Hero World Tour PC
I don't have a console, so my first contact with this genre was Guitar Hero III. I wasn't particularly keen on this sort of game but i admit they sounded like a lot of fun. While GH:III was an enjoyable experience, the lag that it originally suffered from, although corrected after a patch, was a bit of a let-down for me, and as i ordered Guitar Hero World Tour for PC i hoped this was a thing of the past. Here are my 2 cents after 3 days of GHWT for PC. I want to cover 2 aspects of the game that i find most relevant: the music, and is this (finally) a good port?

First thing's first: Guitar Hero is all about the music. I find the songs much more diverse than GH III, but that's up to you to decide if it's a good or bad thing. I personally was a bit disappointed as there are very few songs that i actually like, but there are quite a few that will make a GH party a hit. There are gigs you can play, similar to GH III, and some you need to "unlock" by buying them. You can also book your own gig, which i found really fun, as you can create a "playlist" of your favorite songs and squeeze some cash out of it too.

All in all the songlist is decent, considering that rocking out to Eye of the Tiger with your friends is really fun, although one may not be so thrilled about many other song choices. This is a matter of taste so people should judge for themselves.

Now, on to more pressing matters: does it lag on PC? My answer after 3 days of extensive play is that i'm disappointed that Activision couldn't find a more COMPETENT company than Aspyr. Yes, the game does lag. Sometimes. The lag doesn't make it unplayable, but the fact that i still get a small freeze here and there even with the graphic settings set to low on a decent rig* makes me wanna go and kick Aspyr in the nuts. If Aspyr was a dude. It also makes the whole experience suckier, rocking out in front of an empty street. Yeah. Awswm.

To conclude, i must emphasise that my grade IS subjective, and it's normal for this to happen because a grade given to a game ultimately represents how much you enjoy that game, and enjoying a music game implies enjoying the music, among other things. Although i'd give it a lower grade, it's fun to play with friends but it has lag issues, so a 7.5 is the most i can give it. I'd consider raising the grade to 8-8.5 after a patch. All in all, not the best of ports.
Just my 2 cents.

*decent rig = E8500 @ 3,16 / HD4870 - 512 megs/ 4 Gigs of RAM. I really expected to rock to a visible crowd. Hate intimate rocking with just my 3 virtual buddies.
