Grandia III: 5 out of 10

User Rating: 5 | Grandia III PS2
Graphics: The graphics in Grandia III's are ok. You'll run through fully 3D rendered maps from point A to point B, get some storyline, go to a town, then repeat. the Sprites are a bit cartoony but are still done very well. The backgrounds are good but start to get a bit boring by the end of the game. 1 out of 2 for graphics.

Sound: Grandia III didn't have much in background music or sound effects beyond the intro video. At least nothing worth mentioning. However the voiceovers where done very well. Unfortunately there were no subtitles for them so you had to turn the volume up to get the majority of the storyline. 1 out of 2 for Sound.

Gameplay: The battle system is where Grandia III shines. A turn base system where each character has two attacks: quick and weak, or slow and strong. Plus magic and special attacks. The game itself felt like one maze after another and kind of got repetitive after a while but only near the very end of the game when the background became more dull. 2 out 2 for gameplay.

Storyline: The storyline was simplistic at best and seemed to have a lot of holes in it. It was just barely intresting enough to keep me playing but it felt as if there was lots of room for improvement. As the story progresses it leaves a lot of questions unanswered and left me wanting something more. 1 out of 2 for Storyline. (What the heck happened to the guy with the axe at the end of the game?)

Misc: Minigames, sidequests and replayablity in this game are practically nonexistent. However it did have good voice overs and I want to give props to just how well the videos and actually game flow together. 0 out of 2 for Misc..

Overall: Grandia III is the first game of the series that i have played. And all i can say is that i have never played a game so ... mediocre. That's not a bad thing but the game did have a lot of room for improvement. Overall i'd say if you can find the game used, it's a good buy. If Grandia IV is anything like this but with a couple of improvements we could have a great game on our hands. 5 out of 10 Overall.
