For anyone who likes the idea of being Gigan

User Rating: 4 | Godzilla: Unleashed WII
If you have ever thought "What would happen if Mecha-King Ghidorah took on Biollante?" or something along those lines, then this game is for you. If you have no idea what this means then avoid it like the plague. This is an all-round awful game that will only please hardcore Godzilla fans.

Let's begin with the story, which is negligible at best. This game revolves around the standard 70's Godzilla plot of aliens trying to take over the earth using giant monsters. However it is communicated extremely poorly through static images and poor dialogue, which I found myself just skipping through towards the end.

The designers attempted to add some longevity to the game by trying to make players earn points to unlock more monsters. However this process is no fun at all, as you are expected to complete the brief campaign several times over.

Outside of the campaign there is the standard brawl mode where you can pit your painfully unlocked monsters together in custom brawls.

The graphics are generally pretty awful even for the wii. Whilst the monsters are animated well, some greater care could've been taken with their textures. The arenas however look absolutely awful. Coupled with some extremely poor building destruction animations, there is no fun in trashing cities.

The music is similarly poor. Thrown out are the classic Godzilla themes, replaced with some weak rock music. Most of the levels are played with no music at all, just with some quite jarring collision sound effects and irritating human commentators. On the other hand, the designers have done well in collecting all the original monster sound effects.

The controls seem to pretty accurately capture the feeling of being a sluggish giant monster. It took me a while to work out how to make the winged characters fly and I found gliding over cities as Rodan to be quite fun, until I hit an invisible barrier and fell to the ground. Combat controls are on the sluggish side with motion controls feeling inaccurate at best. Aiming energy beams isn't nearly as bad as the review suggests, but still pretty bad.

In spite of being a terribly flawed game, for a Godzilla fan it is amazing. Most of the monsters from the series, including the always impressive Biollante, are present, and the painful unlock process can be skipped with an unlock everything cheat that is then saved. Its many faults can be easily overlooked by those who want to recreate classic battles from the movies or stage their own match ups. It's even better for those who can somehow find three other kaiju fans and recreate battles like Godzilla and Jet Jaguar vs. Megalon and Gigan. It should be noted however that some of the character balancing is awful with characters like Rodan being absolutely useless.

In conclusion, this game should be avoided by the majority of the gaming public. This is a game purely for those who get excited when hearing Godzilla's famous roar or King Ghidorah's strange alien beeps.
