Gory action adventure game set in mythical Greece

User Rating: 9.5 | God of War (Greatest Hits) PS2
Kratos was a fearsome Spartan warrior. His ferocity in battle lead him from leading just 50 men to an army of thousands. However, in a battle against a large barbarian horde, his army was overwhelmed, and in a desperate measure, Kratos offered his life to Ares, the God of War, in exchange for Ares to spite down his enemies. Ares sensed great power in Kratos and granted him the Blades of Chaos, blades on the ends of long chains attached to Kratos' arms, and wiped the barbarian forces out, with Kratos decapitating the leader.

Years later, as Ares is destroying Athens, the goddess Athena tasks Kratos with killing Ares, thus beginning your adventure.

The gameplay revolves around combat and puzzle solving. The player can use a variety of combos to take out his or her enemies with the blades of chaos. You are also granted with special magic abilities from the gods to help in your fight against Ares, such as Zeus's Thunderbolt and the Army of Hades. When you kill enemies, you receive red orbs, which can be used to upgrade your weapons and magic.

The game also features puzzles that may take a few minutes, or even an hour to solve, but you feel accomplished when you complete it.

The graphics are simply some of the best the PS2 has to offer. The game features ancient Greek settings with large, detailed back drops, and some truly breath-taking views.

The sound may be one of the best parts of the game. The music fits the tone of the game perfectly, with war-drums and horns playing during combat. You can also hear bones breaking and flesh being torn apart, and the sound of stabbing your blade in a minotaurs throat is pretty unforgettable.

The value may be somewhat lacking in the game. The game on medium clocks in on around 9 hours. Once you beat it, you unlock the super hard God Mode, but since you already know the story and you don't unlock anything special, it may not be worth it to break your controller in frustration

As of now, the game is a Greatist Hit, so the next time you see it you should pick it up, you won't be disapointed.
