A must-play game in the ps2. If action/adventure isn't your thing, then GoW1 will change your mind about that.

User Rating: 10 | God of War (Greatest Hits) PS2
God of War 1 is one of those games that when you look back you can say that it was one of your favorites. That's how I feel about it due to how entertaining it was for me. It took me a long time to decide to buy it because I never thought (being an rpg fan) that a 10 hour game could be worth buying or much less be better than a good 40 hour game. My opinion changed after I beat the game 5 times about 2 months later. First of all, a quick way to describe this game is "the best action game for someone who is not into beat'em'ups" and a single word to describe it is EPIC. GoW1 starts with action right from the very beginning and keeps an air of adventure alive throughout the entire game, which is not long, but unlike other games, it remains good and entertaining all the way through. There is no moment of boredom in this game, unless you get stuck in one of the puzzles, but that won't be for long. Also, the difficulty is perfect for ANY player. Those who literally s(uck at action games can play it on easy, where believe it or not, even the final boss battle is easy!I I am not kidding! Others who haven't played action games in a long time, like me, can go through it in normal and get some challenge out of it without any kind of frustration. The "good" players can start in hard right away and get the challenge they want, or beat the game once and go for god mode, which is as the game describes 'very hard' but still beatable, unlike the insanity of "Dante must die" mode in Devil May Cry 3. It requires new strategies and feels different than the normal mode game because certain areas that weren't a big deal before get much more tough in god mode, and you simply need to find a better strategy to get past them.
Also, it is worth mentioning that you don't need to be a "ninja" with your controller to kick *** in this game because all the moves can be executed with a simple button combinaton, no need for combos here. The gameplay is simple, yet great, that's the best way to describe it. The graphics are magnificient for a ps2 game and the music fits every area and situation VERY well. The story is not as elaborate as any great rpg story, but it fits perfectly with the game. You get very few cutscenes and each one reveals another detail about the protagonist's dark past; thus, simple as it is, this story contributes to making the player want to keep going, because naturally the player wants to find out what's next in the flashback that follows. This worked well because you are really playing through the whole thing, and the few cutscenes with tons of gameplay in between fit very well. Overall, this wasn't better than any superb rpg story-wise, the main character and the story are not something amazing but entertainment -wise this was a BLAST for me, the great gameplay and everything else was right into place to make the game an entertaining experience. To top it all there was a major plot-twist that would surprise any spoiler-free player like myself and a simple yet satisfying ending that couldn't have closed the game better than it did.

I was thinking about giving this a 9.5/10 but considering how entertaining it was (and that's the main goal for games in general) it deserves the 10. This game is one of those that feels as if you played through an epic adventure or through an amazing sci-fi movie.

conclusion:
If you have a ps2 (or ps3) and you still haven't played this game then get it when you see it (if you are old enough to play it of course!!) and even if you are not into action games you shouldn't worry because its great balance of difficulty makes sure that any player enjoys this one. This is 1 of the top 10 games in the console.

my extra ratings (be aware I rate hard on this, both 10/10s = simply 1 of the most fun games in existance :p)
fun factor--- 9.4/10
overall entertainment--- 9.8/10

length--- no more than 12 hours to beat the 1st time in normal; ~8 hours to beat the 10 unlocked challenges, and that's if you are very good, if not then +10 hours for that; every extra playthrough (in a harder mode or using a costume) took me less than 7 hours, the only one that took between 7-8 hours was the god mode playthrough..... so if you want to unlock everything (100%) this will last 25-40 hours for sure, if you just want to beat it then ~10, but great 10 hrs for sure
