I had been watching this game since I first saw the trailers a couple of months ago and had really been looking forward to checking this one out. This game did not disappoint, and I am thoroughly loving Gas Guzzlers. Graphically, surprisingly well done, and the detail to the landscapes and environments are great. You race in many different locations and in many types of environments, sand, dirt, snow, asphalt, and with also day and night driving as well. The game starts out slow where you are given a very tiny compact, (that can barely get out it's own way) then as you learn the game physics, (this does take awhile because the driving is fairly challenging unless your a racing game fan, some newbies most likely will give up) it actually took me about 6-8 races before I ever placed in the top 3. Unlocks start to come as you get better, and this enables you to purchase upgrades, weapons, and other cars. The game rewards patience, so don't get frustrated, get better. After I learned how the cars handle, (using a Xbox 360 controller) and how the A.I. of the opponents treat you, (they are very aggressive, and one hard bump from the them sends you spinning out of control, in fact too much love to the other cars I believe). Great detail is also given to the isometric smoke and dust that is kicked up during the races, in fact at the beginning of a race, (and you in the back of course) for a while you see nothing ahead of you, just a huge cloud of dust and smoke, really liked this effect the first time I saw it. I also loved the background music during campaign level menus, it reminded me of Fallout 3, where it sounds like some really old 78 records playing, thought this was really cleaver. Lastly my only challenge in the game was with the controller setup. It does not auto map your controller, (or let you control the menus with it) you must manually assign your buttons prior to game-play. This was a little frustrating at first, because I thought that the controller was unrecognized. This is not explained in the manual or on the website, so do know that you must figure this out on your own. (So far this is my only neg. thought towards this game). Other than that so far GREAT! Love Gas Guzzlers! A winner for me in the genre of Flatout, or Burnout, but with weapons!
