Question regarding XBL Gold

I got my brother an Xbox 360, but he can't really afford to buy a lot of games on his income, but I remembered about a year ago Microsoft started giving ou free games every month (week?) for XBL gold users.

Do they still do this? Will this carry on to 2014? If so I might just get him a gold sub instead

Yes, they're currently doing it and it's been extended into next year

Also, this week they have been giving away cheaper prices for "new" games, and some extra free game (like The wolf among us Episode, which is awesome, and the rest of the chapters for 10 bucks total).

The games you get free are really old though.
