This isn't anything specific to games in general. All software go through a development cycle starting out with Alpha (really early, barely stable or usable code), to Beta (got some meat to it, could actually work, but could burn your house down) and some do Release Candidates and then General Availability. That's kind of the way it goes.. General Alpha is kept in-house, Beta can be in-house or can be external, but usually controlled in some manner..in game-land, the next step is probably release..

beta is like .....when the game is in the middle of the development......... Alpha ( just testing stuff ) Beta ( a cleaner look of the game,graphics,gameplay,maps etc etc) Finished( when is finished :lol: )
