BF2 connection issues

I recently picked up Battlefield 2, played singleplayer only up to this point.
I try to load up multiplayer, but I get a message saying "Could not connect to EA servers".
Might this be due to the game being scarcely populated, or is it just because the EA servers suck? Help would be appreciated.
