I'm a long time PS3 user who recently got a 360 so I can play such titles as the Halo and Gears of War series. I am enjoying the 360 so far, but the whole childish feel to the interface is really bothering me. I sort of expected something sophisticated like the PS3. The 360 is a highly advanced peices of machinery that has a whole range of mature and adult games, yet every time I log on I have some child-like looking cartoonish avatar of myself waving at the screen.

The worst part is, I can't find a way to turn it off or hide it either. This is the type of thing I expect from Nintendo. And in fact the avatars do remind me a lot of the Nintendo Mii's. But with the type of games played in Nintendo consoles you expect little cartoony avatars like that.

It's not a huge deal, it's still a good console. It's just something that bothers me everytime I turn it on.

Is there a way of turning it off/hiding it that I haven't discovered yet?

No way to turn it off, I'm afraid. Might be a way to skip the dashboard on startup then just use the guide menu to navigate. Funny thing is, a year or so ago I bought a PS3 to play Uncharted and such. I thought the PS3 equivalent of the dashboard was hard to read tried too hard to be sleek and cutting edge. I also resented it as a rehash of their handheld's menu.

Oh yeah, I'll look into that idea of skipping the dashboard.

When I first got the PS3 it only took me about 30 minutes of using it to get used to their dahsboard and layout. I found it really easy to navigate and quite nice to look at as well. It has a nice layout style I think.

I also think the 360 has a crisp, clean type layout that is nice, I just wish those damn little avatars weren't there making me feel like a 2 year old playing some sort of kiddy game.

You're going to hate the PS4 dashboard then. It's almost completely similar to the X360 dashboard.

I don't dislike the 360 dashboard. If you read up above I said that I like it. I like everything EXCEPT for the little cartoony avatars. If the PS4 dashboard is similar but with no cartoony people then I'll be happy.

I dislike the whole layout of the Dashboard, but since I don't usually have any use for it I just have my system automatically boot to the game in the disc tray.

I was pretty disappointed way back when they announced the avatars, but in the years since, I've actually grown quite fond of mine.

I find it more disturbing that people actually spend REAL money on outfitting their avatars with buying clothes, accessories and props. THAT is insane :?

I do agree to a point.  I remember when they implemented the avatars.  It all just seemed like a direct response to the popularity of the Wii.  They are sort of fun when you gain avatar awards and such in the games, but other than that I completely ignore it.

What's broken about the PS3? I've had mine for 4 years and it's never had any issues. It also doesn't treat me like a 4 year old whenever I log on and have some little kiddy cartoon waving at me.

If you actually read my first post, I said "it's not a huge deal", that's my actual quote. It's just something small that bothers me and I came here to ask you all if there was a way I could turn it off. I'd say by this post that you are more frustrated by this thread, than I am by the avatars. It pays to actually read things all the way through.

Ok, does sophisticated mean an interface that'll take long time to shut down and turn back on, and if done "improperly" the system will take several minutes to turn on again then analyze the system and sometimes be caught in an infinite loop you can't get out unless you do some research. Yeah the xbox interface is not sophisticated, it just works. I own both consoles and I really find the PS3 Firmware to be simply hideous

Wait, long time to shut down and long time to turn on? My PS3 has never had that. It's always really fast to start up and turn off. Infinite loop? Are you sure it's a PS3 you have and you didn't get it confused with something else. It doesn't sound like a PS3.
